2021 Season | Series #43 | Twins @ Indians | Sep. 6-9

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Could be the worst series of the season — so far.

I'm trying to find a good reason why players (Harold, Johnson) that won't be on the 40 man in November aren't DFAd now, and youngsters like Gonzalez and Kwan don't get a look.

They will probably not make the 40 man either, but what would it hurt to see them against MLB pitching?

Brutal team to watch right now. It was humiliating to see them dominated for seven innings by a kid making his second major league start. So far two runs in 27 innings against the Twins and we still haven't scored on their bullpen. They now lead the season series 10-5.

The only good that came out of this one was McKenzie went six innings allowing just one run. He continues to pitch exceptionally well. He's setting himself up for a run at the Cy Young next year if he continues to pitch like he has the last six starts.

At this point the front office is being forced to admit that this team isn't going anywhere with guys like Zimmer, Harold, Mercado, Johnson, Gimenez, Clement, Chang, and Miller in the lineup. Naylor is also questionable, IMO. They need to trade for a real outfield bat or give Kwan or Oscar Gonzalez a shot. Or both.

I could see Naylor and Harold platooning in left field since they both have an OPS of .800 against the opposite side pitcher. I can see Straw in center. But unless they think either Kwan or Gonzalez are ready to produce at this level they need to make a trade.

I see no real reason not to DFA Harold and add Oscar for the final stretch. Main reason is Oscar walks without getting rostered, so might as well do it now and see if the power shows up in the majors.

Johnson seems like he's pretty lost too, one of those guys who you just seem to keep waiting for.. And waiting.. And waiting. Can't take a walk to save his life and his D doesn't seem to pass the "eyeball test" despite positive reviews..

Heck call up Arias and let him play while we're at it.

Cy Young forMcKenzie in 2022? Really? Otherwise, I agree with all the above.

High attendance is good to have and it is important for increasing the budget, that being stated...

Resigning JRam isn't going to fix Dolan's rep. If signing EE didn't increase attendance much and he was a top free agent that got food money the off season after a World Series appearance... Then nothing is going to the issues of attendance...
The attendance went up significantly after they signed EE. Also, Jose Ramirez is 100 times more important to the fan base than Encarnacion was.

I agree with you completely. The #no love # for Gonzalez here is ridiculous. I don't know the rules for minor league free agents, but the Indians need to sign him. So what if he's a sub standard defensive player. The franchise has been clamoring for corner outfielders that can hit for 4 years now. They gonna just let this guy walk after these numbers? I'm sick of watching Johnson and Mercado stinking out the place.

Exactly. Both should be up right now.

FWIW, Tribe attendance in 2021 isn’t as bad as you might expect, comparatively speaking.

My point is though, if we are 21st, we aren't going to have a payroll ever much above that type of ranking in the league.

The attendance went up significantly after they signed EE. Also, Jose Ramirez is 100 times more important to the fan base than Encarnacion was.

That significant increase made us go from 28th to 22nd via ESPN, but payroll wise we went from 23rd to 17th then to 16th in 18 but we never got above 21st in attendance in 18...

If our attendance is in the bottom ten in the league, never expect our payroll to be above the same number normally. Which bottom ten is around 100 million or less per season.

Using the Rays style of system when it comes to player development and whatnot, I have never had below a 90 win season with a budget of 120 million in OOTP, and if Antonetti had a 15ish attendance, that would be his budget normally... So until we get way better attendance than we currently have consistently, we aren't normally ever going to be above 100 million likely again under Dolan. That is because he will be working close to, if not under the red any higher...

The attendance went up because it was the year after reaching the World Series.

No he isn’t.

Have you considered that claiming individual players drive attendance spikes is just an incredibly bad argument that isn’t supported by any evidence of causation?
