2021 Season | Series #43 | Twins @ Indians | Sep. 6-9

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This is the Hentges that we ALL want to see a LOT more of.. the slider is just mesmorizing.. it never gets there... Nice outing..
Did I see a couple of change ups as well? If he could ever develop a good one along with a bit more control then he could be special. How many times has that been said about young, talented pitchers?

9th inning wimper.. 1-2-3... Daniel Johnson looks over matched.. he has no idea what he's seeing out of the pitcher's hand.. Onto game 2 of the series..
Johnson's bat looks very quick and I've seen him hit a looooong home run, but he just can't seem to barrel up the ball more than once a week.

It was pretty much rookies against veterans. The Indians pitched three rookies; Allen, Vargas, and Hentges, none of whom broke camp with the Tribe. Only Hentges will probably be on the team next year. The Twins started a rookie, but this was his 17th start. Then they finished with three veterans; Pineda, Duffy, and Colume. Our minor leaguers against their major league veterans.

Tomorrow we send out a major league pitcher in Aaron Civale, even though he hasn't pitched since June.

Buxton and Polanco were a two-man wrecking crew going 6-for-10 with four runs and two RBI's. Again, very good major league hitters against minor league pitchers. Hard to believe Buxton is pushing 40 at-bats without getting injured again.

The big takeaway was Hentges two-inning relief job in which he retired six batters and allowed one hit - a weak infield roller to a fast left-handed hitter. Hentges threw 26 out of 32 pitches for strikes and mixed his pitches beautifully. He struck out Polanco, who was 4-for-4 up to that point, along with Refsnyder (hitting .318 against lefties), and Jeffers.

Bimbo talked about how effective Hentges could be if they task him to pitch one or two innings and just throw the high 90's heat and mix in the breaking stuff. We saw what that could look like tonight. Maybe next year he could become the next in the lefty chain starting with Andrew Miller and Brad Hand.

......
I had to do a double-check.... Vargas is still on the shelf recovering from TJ surgery...

Justin Garza was the other pitcher...

I don't believe he threw a single change up.. FB, SL and CB's... Control was the key.. he was getting a LOT of swings over the top of his slider..

..and started on April 5th
Correct, thanks. He got sent down so fast I forget he started the season in the rotation. I guess my point is that Allen, Hentges, and Garza (for some reason I keep calling him Vargas) have spent significant time in Columbus along with Mercado, Zimmer, Miller, and Bradley - all who were in the lineup last night.

The game came down to Polanco, Buxton, and Refsnyder being better than Allen and the Tribe offense being shut out by three veteran relievers for five innings.

Civale makes his return tonight against John Gant, RHP, age 29, with a career mark of 23-24, 3.85. This year he was with St. Louis through the end of July where he compiled an ERA of 3.42. Since coming to the Twins he's allowed 14 earned runs in 21 innings for an ERA of 6.00. For the season he's appeared in 35 games with 17 starts. His ERA as a starter is 4.32.

His weakness appears to be command; he has walked 52 batters in 77 innings. He looks like the definition of a veteran journeyman.

Civale has not pitched in nearly two months so I'm not expecting a dominating performance. It almost doesn't matter how well he pitches, just that he throws 70 pitches or so and knocks off some rust.

Now that the Indians will be going with a six-man rotation Hale says Sam Hentges will probably be getting more work. Great - we need to see what he can do coming out of the pen on a regular basis in some high leverage situations. They need to scale back the workload of Shaw and Wittgren in my opinion. I'd also like to see more of Stephan and Garza to assess whether they should be in the plans ofr next year.

I wouldn't mind seeing today's AAA lineup play our ML lineup today. If Columbus was starting Morris, it would be a fun game.

Encouraging first two innings for Civale.

Two comebacks to the mound and a three pitch K for us in the second.

Hurrah, hurrah.

Miller has quietly been producing at the plate lately.

And he has an inf single to lead off the third.

And is quickly erased on a 6-4-3.
