The Tribe staggers back home after a 3-5 road trip where they lost Josh Naylor to a horrific leg injury. They have a three-game series against the Tigers before having to face Houston and Tampa Bay in the next seven.
The Tigers are in a three-way tie for last place at 34-44, but they are playing better lately with a 16-16 record in their last 32. They went 2-2 against the Astros over the weekend with the last three games decided by scores of 3-1, 3-2, and 2-1. They've been competitive of late.
The Indians lead the season series 7-3. The three losses were in games started by Fulmer, Boyd, and Teheran; all on the injured list.
The Indians are 20-13 at home while the Tigers are 15-23 on the road. The Tigers are last in the A.L. in scoring at 3.88 runs per game. They are 10th in team ERA.
Rookie Akil Baddoo is hitting .304/.962 against RHPs and .351 in June. He's hitting .357 with RISP. He'll see all right-handers in this series.
Jonathan Schoop is hitting .330/1.102 in June. However, he's only hitting .260/.742 against RHPs.
Miggy is hitting .225 on the season but .301 in June. So far the Tribe has contained him; he's hitting .167 against Cleveland pitchers. In June 17 of his 22 hits have been singles with one home run. On the season he has 10 extra base hits in 209 AB's.
Former Indian Eric Haase has 8 home runs but is hitting .192 against RHPs.
The Tigers just don't have a lot of punch offensively and they have a lot of pitchers injured, including Fulmer, Boyd, Teheran, Holland, and Turnbull. Somehow they're playing .500 ball.
Tonight Eli Morgan goes against 23-year-old rookie Matt Manning, making his third start. Manning has been solid in his first two outings, going 5.0 and 5.2 innings and allowing two runs each game. Other than being right-handed I don't know anything about him.
Morgan pitched five great innings against the Cubs in his last start, allowing just a solo home run to Kris Bryant while strking out 9 and walking none. But then he got hammered in the 6th. The Tigers are weaker offensively than the Cubs so if Morgan can go 5-6 strong innings tonight it would be very encouraging. He has improved in each of his three starts.
Tomorrow Mejia goes against Jose Urena (2-8, 6.00). Urena pitched 5.2 scoreless innings against the Indians five weeks ago. He didn't pitch again for 11 days with a right forearm strain and since then has an ERA of 12.89 in four starts, allowing 26 hits and 10 walks in just under 15 innings. He doesn't look like the same pitcher. The forearm strain was due to throwing too many curveballs so maybe his pitch selection has changed in order to stay healthy.
Mejia went 6 innings in his last start, allowing one run. It would be great if he could build off that and have another successful outing.
Wednesday Quantrill goes against 32-year-old RHP Wily Peralta, 0-1, 5.00. Wily had an ERA of 5.80 in 2019 and did not pitch last year. He has started two games for the Tigers. In his last start he went 2.2 innings, throwing 50 pitches. In his other start he gave up 5 runs in 5 innings to the Angels. Lefties have an OPS of 1.294 against him in 11 at-bats. Opposing batters are 3-for-20 against him the first time through but 4-for-8 the second time. I think they just want to get 3-4 decent innings out of him, if possible.
Quantrill was awful his last start, but has given up one run in three innings against the Tigers this year.
It would be great if the Indians could get back on track before having to go into the lion's den. The three Indians starters have one win combined this year while the Tigers starters have won four games. We're a long way from the days of Bieber, Kluber, Bauer, or Carrasco against Verlander, Fulmer, or Fiers. Pretty pathetic, really. Both teams are bringing up kids from the minors and signing veterans like Wily Peralta and Brad Peacock off the street.
