The Yankees come in for a four-game series on a freshly snow-ploughed field. We haven't seen them since...well, let's not mention that. Anyway, the Bronx Bombers currently reside in the unfamiliar location of last place in the A.L. East with a record of 6-11, having lost 6 of their last 7 games.
So what's the problem? It's not pitching - they rank 2nd in the A.L. in team ERA at 3.41, slightly ahead of the Indians. But the offense has been pathetic, ranking 14th in the A.L. at 3.47 runs per game, just behind the Indians. This could be one of the lowest scoring series of the season as two good-pitch, no-hit teams meet.
The Yankees have a team BA of .208 and are last in the league in ISO. That's a bad combination for scoring runs. They've scored 21 runs in their last eight games. The offense is bad and trending down. Aaron Judge has an OPS of .859. Nobody else is over .760. Sanchez, Stanton, Torres, Hicks, and Frazier are all hitting below the Mendoza line. If we want to trade for Frazier now might be the time.
The Yankees are an old team featuring nine players 31 or older, including 35-year-old Corey Kluber (5.40 ERA) who is not scheduled to start in this series. The Indians have the youngest team in the majors. This might be the oldest team against the youngest. Also the most expensive team against the cheapest, or pretty close.
One thing we shouldn't have to worry about is the running game. The Yankees are 29th in the majors in stolen base attempts per game. They know they're old and slow.
By the way, if I could swap the Indians roster for the Yankees and keep the payroll the same, would I do it? Not a chance.
Domingo German starts tonight against Civale, who is a perfect 3-0. German was 18-4 in 2019 but his ERA was 4.04. He must have gotten some amazing run support. He missed all of last year's 60 games on a domestic violence suspension. In his two starts this year he's given up seven runs in seven innings, allowing 12 hits. Missing an entire season may have affected him, not that he was all that great before.
Jordan Montgomery, a lefty, goes in game 2. In three starts he has a 4.24 ERA, going 17 innings and allowing 11 hits. However, four of those hits have been home runs and the Indians have scored 68% of their runs via the long ball so they like pitchers who give up the gopher. Maybe Luplow gets another dinger off this guy.
Gerritt Cole goes against Bieber in game 3. That should be fun. This could be a 1-0 game in 10 innings. Cole has a 1.82 ERA in four starts. Enough said.
Jameson Taillon goes in game 4. He has a 5.40 ERA in three starts covering only 13.1 innings. He looks like a five-and-fly guy only he hasn't quite been getting five. But his last start he held the opponent to one run in five innings so he may be coming around.
Despite being 6-11 the Yankee's run differential is only a -10.
