Nolan Jones went to Tito and said he wants to try first base. At Columbus they were working with Benson at first base (before he was promoted) and now Arias.

I guess nobody is all that impressed by Owen Miller.

The search for a corner outfielder who can also play first base from time to time when Naylor could use a day off or a DH day continues. First it was Jake Bauer. Then Josh Naylor, who was playing right field when he had his injury. Now that Naylor is no longer an outfielder they're looking at Benson and Jones as possibilities.

Another option is a middle infielder who can also play first. Yu Chang didn't work out and neither is Miller, so far. Looks like Arias is the next one up.

A right-handed bat would be ideal for that role, IMO, so they can rest Naylor against certain lefties. So I think Arias might have the edge over Jones and Benson. It also might be easier for an infielder to play first base than an outfielder with limited experience playing ground balls.
Honestly I dont know why Miller isnt being mentioned as a strong DFA candidate. You could probably find a similar bat with a little more infield defense on the waiver wire.

Naw, most of those guys don't have the same bat/minor league pedigree Miller has. It's too soon to give up on him...

Not really sure what we'd gain with Arias at 1B unless he learns to hit better and actually would be an upgrade over Miller. I don't see that as the case now. Even if he does pick up the hitting (and he has been significantly better lately), he still is a much better fit at SS. If we trade Rosario in the offseason he would at least have an opportunity with Rocchio knocking on the door, although the Freeman 2B / Gimenez SS route is intriguing.

Naylor just needs to be off the field as much as possible IMO. Would honestly be a godsend to have an actual LHB 1B able to put up some decent ABs. Not sure Nolan's the guy but being able to DH Naylor is huge with his current condition. Maybe after an offseason putting him there won't be as much of an issue to his health but we need his bat against righties as much as possible, and avoiding the field seems like the best way to accomplish that.

Miller has actually played a very strong 1B defense as of late. Since he does have good foot speed I wonder what he might be able to provide for the team if he could play the OF as well, enhancing his value as a bench contributor. But this does not always work out (see: Palacios).

Palacios though hasn't had much of a chance to get OF reps... He can hit, just gotta figure a position lol

I don't really know how he was at a 2B but if he were able to play 2B at any aptitude he should have some trade value at least. We clearly do not need a LHB 2B but someone who can play a half-acceptable 2B seems a lot more valuable than someone struggling in LF.

Edit: Honestly what if he were the one to learn how to play 1B. Supposedly his arm is his biggest flaw so he won't have to do much throwing there.

Problem is his bat doesn't profile for 1B since he is pure contact...

He has a longer leash than that...
I think he means demoted back AAA, not bumped completely. Freeman and Arias are coming for his time and needs to produce or get stepped over..

Amed on the roster doesn't help Owen at all, as one of his pursuers would likely fill Amed's roster spot... So it's put up or shut up time.

drew waters.. the prospect the Royals acquired for their competitive balance lottery selection.. is being called up by the Royals.. He moved from Gwinnett to Omaha, where, in 140 or so PA's he slashed .300/.400/.540... IOW.. pretty good offensive numbers.. We'll get to see him in KC in early September..

Lots of K's, doubt he'll perform too well but if he does get going they can have a very interesting young core of position players with Witt, Pasquantino, Melendez, maybe Isbel, Olivares might be a late bloomer... Problem is they don't have much in the way of arms outside of Singer, the others are all clearly not there yet although Lynch at least looks like a rotation piece. Alec Marsh was supposed to be their guy and he can't really throw strikes. Maybe they'll keep signing Greinke to 1 year contracts lol.
