They couldn't sign free agents when LBJ was here and we were at the very top of the league, why would you think anything would be different now?? There's always money available for the stars, and with money being equal or close to it the players want some combination of big markets, night life, warm weather and/or no taxes. We meet zero of this criteria.
Blind optimism

Weird seeing b2b games against the same team 4 times in the last month - all on the road. No team gets to do that at our stadium. When I saw this, I thought this was a typo. Benefits from not to travel back.

We got 5 prime time games:
Lakers and Memphis on TNT and NO, Boston, and Phil on ESPN.
Then we have 4 games on NBATV.

5 game road early in the season. Despite the number of road games in the last month, it is an opportunity to excel in the end.

You see a scenario where trading Love for Barnes is THE move that makes us an ECF participant, and well, I'd have to watch the tape from the multiverse where Harrison Barnes is that type of impact player.
its not THE move....its one of three.....signing sexton.....the improvement of both mobely/garland.....and the replacement of the injury-prone 10 minute/playoff game kevin love

didnt we already go through all this on the trade thread where you guys argued in futility the value of harrsion barnes?...... where scalabirine point blank said teh celtics where trying to trade for barnes last year?.....and the video i posted where both lowe and woj said that it was a 1st and 2nd that the celitcs offered for barnes and woj insinuated that it was the kings that ended up backing out of the deal?....

move on , already

A scal video proves nothing. We argued with you based on the math that Barnes was in fact not worth what you think he is but you decided to ignore our arguments based on advanced metrics and tape

Conversely, the same two factors show Love as an impact player who might be overpaid but is better than Harrison Barnes.

It's a different league and players have different priorities now. Can I get paid, can I contend, and for how long are the top priorities. This is even more true with the over 30 crew eating up so much cap.

You are kidding yourself. The only thing to change is that player movement has almost stopped except for lower level guys. When a star does move he's certainly not coming to middle America. When was the last time a top free agent went to a non big market or coastal team. Hell, Leonard got traded to Toronto, won a ring and had a great longterm situation, and left before the banners even got hung. There's always going to be money out there for the top guys especially with the cap exploding soon, so if they can get equal or near equal money elsewhere they are not coming here.

i think the cavs are hoping that they will not need a top free agent (top 10) because they already have garland, mobely and allen....they just need filler pieces now...filler pieces like 2018 bench players serge ibaka and fred van vleet....filler pieces that wont get injured and that they can count on being there in the playoffs....the raptors dont win the finals without both fvv and ibaka.....

The Cavs don't need a Leonard type and the problem with the new vet max/supermax contracts is that those premier markets don't have the available cap. Also, before LBJ walked on to the Lakers roster, they went a decade without signing anyone of note. They couldn't even get meetings with premier free agents.

Winning matters. Being involved in the offense matters The perception of a team's chemistry matters

Rondo said playing on this roster was the most phone he'd had in a very long time. He made a point to emphasize how unselfish this young team was. LeVert was excited to sign here and wants to extend. I promise you that there were multiple suitors for Rubio at the tax MLE he signed for.

But really, if you tell yourself yourself you can't have nice things, you won't. The narrative that no one will sign here anyway so the Cavs shouldn't worry about cap space is very much a self-fufilling prophecy.

This is it. As the Cavs improve their record and rep for being a fun unselfish team guys will want to play there.

In fact, it already has happened. Rubio "didn't want to play in Cleveland" but now he is back. Also Robin and Neto are both upgrades from the backup spots last year.

So, it is already working.

I remember when Rubio got traded here and he didn’t want to be here. If this team can take a leap this season we can be a power house starting next year imo

Unrealistic to think every young guy is going to make a big leap this year, but equally unrealistic that we will be the same team. Some young guys will take a leap and odds of it being the main ones that have driven the success like Mobley and Darius are pretty high.

You can always get players like Neto and Lopez. They are out there for any team in the league every single year. I was replying to a post referring to getting players such as Jaylen Green and Gary Trent Jr, in other words players anyone in the league would want and players there will be competition for and will get a max or near max deal elsewhere.
Look at it this way. In the entire history of this organization, outside of LBJ who lived and played here, our biggest free agent signing ever was probably Larry Hughes. The Chicago Bulls, a huge market and a team that was a dynasty for years and has been very competitive much of the time since then, have either an aged Carlos Boozer or an aging Demar Derozan as their biggest signings. The Pacers signed an aging David West. The Pistons made some very successful free agent signings during the bad boy era but none of them were highly sought after players, they were players that achieved stardom in Detroit. Hell the Dallas Mavs have a beloved owner in a no tax state and yet they've made multiple unsuccessful attempts to lure top free agents even while having some of the top players in the league already there. We can save cap dollars till hell freezes over and the top guys still aren't coming to Cleveland.

That's four road games where we don't have to travel - we're already there and get a day off on top of it. It beats playing on Tuesday, flying on Weds, and playing somewhere else on Thursday.

Three days off after a home game in March and then we play at Brooklyn. Nice. Then we get a day off and play them again. I like it. Sure beats playing in Miami and then flying to Brooklyn to play the Nets the following night.

Good test for JBB. Can he add a a little wrinkle between games to adjust to the opponent like a mini playoff series

But you can't always get those players. We have demonstrably worse backups last year. Pangos wasn't able to run an NBA offense, and Ed Davis, god love him, was benched in favor of let me consult my rolodex, Moses Brown. Neto and Lopez are on a different level than the guys we had last year.

I agree that we might not see a max free agent come here no matter what. However, we are going to be getting a better crop of backup free agent guys because the team is good now, and there is a chance to compete. Guys want to play with a guy like Darius.
