2022 Season | Series #13 | Tigers @ Guardians | May 19-21, 2022

Terrible luck today. Should have been a win. Now 2 or 3 games under our Pyth record

2 measly fucking runs is all they could muster? This offense is painful to watch as a whole.

Okay so 1-3 in a easy stretch, sounds about right for a young team with 0 expectations inside of a very winnable division.

Tough loss. Anytime you have Bieber starting and the opponent has six players entering the game with batting averages of .205 and lower you expect to win.

Defense in the 5th inning was the difference. In the top half both Jose and Naylor failed to field ground balls that were catchable. Jose fumbled a ground ball up the middle by their catcher that should have been an out. And Naylor was charged with an error when a smash got under his glove. If either of those plays are made no runs score.

In the bottom of the 5th Cameron made the incredible catch on Rosario's drive that saved at least one run and probably two. So the plays in the field that were made or not made were the difference.

Reyes had possibly his worst at-bat of the season in the first inning with one out and the bases loaded. The previous two hitters had walked, so Franmil needed to be patient in this important at-bat. Instead he waved at a first pitch breaking ball a foot outside and in the dirt to fall behind 0-1. After missing another breaking ball it was 0-2. We know that Reyes gets a breaking ball outside and in the dirt 99% of the time on an 0-2 count. Of course that's exactly what he got and of course he waved at it again. He couldn't have hit that ball with a five-foot boat oar. A better at-bat where he at least put the ball in play and got a run home would have helped a lot.

The Tigers are a bad team but they have a great bullpen so you have to get to their starter and the G's couldn't put enough hits together.

Bieber had eight days off and it showed. The first two runs were scored by players that walked and stole second. Both RBI hits were on hanging sliders belt high in the center of the plate. Bieber could have easily given up five or more runs except for baserunning blunders and line drives right at defenders. However, the ten strikeouts were encouraging. He's gradually clawing his way back to where he should be, IMO.

Reyes hit two more warning track outs, so he's baby-stepping his way back. Hopefully.

With Kwan on first base, nobody out and Hedges up, I'd have Kwan running, simply because Hedges hits into so many double plays. Might as well try to steal. They didn't, and Hedges hit into a double play.

Sam Hentges is quietly turning into a very good reliever. Owen Miller hit three balls right on the screws. Naylor in his first game back worked a walk after being down 0-2 and later homered on a pitch at the outside corner at the knees.

Baby steps, but things are starting to happen.

When are we going to stop giving Bieber a pass for his continued average to slightly above average performance? More importantly, he continues to come up short when needed most. It seems like his Cy Young winning stuff was light years ago.

Honestly if JRam doesn't miss a couple key defensive plays, Bieber's line looks a lot better. Still a fair amount of hard hit balls, velocity, blah...

When he realized he had to get ahead in the count early and laid heavy on the breaking/offspeed stuff.... He looked pretty good.

Certainly not Cy Young caliber, but enough to give your guys a decent maybe even better chance to win.

hmm... a few observations...

1. Bieber, after the first two innings was large and in charge.. while the radar gun wasn't lighting up.. Bieber lit up a bunch of Tiger hitters..

2. Franmill Reyes needed to be put on the bench, fined after that dreadful series of at bats.. Clueless about what is coming would be an improvement for him.. he's completely lost at the plate..

3. Naylor is fast becoming the soul of this club.. Hosey remains the heart..

4. Hentges appears to be faster than the gun says.. that nasty back foot slider is almost unhittable..

5. Outfield defense, other than Straw, is pretty questionable..

This is not a good club.. sub .500 is to be expected..

Use this year to figure out how NOT to be sub .500 going forward. I hate that Jose's 29 year old season is a throwaway, also hate Tito being in the sunset of his career being a wash year.

This division is very winnable. It's just we don't have the proper roster.

Way too much focus on Bieber here. No, not his best stuff by any means and it's taking him a bit to round into shape, but because he's a pitcher and not just a thrower he is finding success. He doesn't need his best stuff to be a good pitcher. He pitched good enough to get the win yesterday. This lineup is not good and the best pitching in the world isn't going to make much of a difference.

This team scored 2 runs on 6 hits yesterday against the Tigers. 2 runs! I don't give a shit who's pitching or how bad the defense is, if you can only muster 2 runs then you are very likely to lose a MLB game.
