The Guardians return home for their first series of the year against the Rangers. The G’s are 6-3 since the “easy” part of their schedule started after taking 5 of 6 against KC and Baltimore. The G’s are in second place, 4.5 games back of the Twins. The Rangers are 25-28 and 12-12 on the road.

The Rangers have lost four of their last five, scoring just 15 runs in the five games. For the season they rank 17th in scoring. They rank 27th in on-base percentage and 28th in walks per game, but 10th in home runs per game. They remind me of the Orioles, who don’t get on base much but score on home runs. The O’s scored 10 runs on 13 hits this weekend with 7 runs coming via the long ball.

None of the Rangers' hitters have an OPS over .780, but they have a lot of guys who can go deep. They have six players with 6-10 home runs. It's a matter of keeping them off the bases so if somebody hits one out it only costs you one run. Their team OBP is only .292. Their OPS against right-handed pitching is 80 points lower than against lefties so that's to the G's advantage.

The Rangers rank 13th in team ERA with the starters ranking 16th and the bullpen 10th.

Jon Gray, a 30-year-old right-hander with a 54-51 career record mostly pitching for the Rockies, starts tonight. This year his ERA is 4.83 in eight starts. His last start was a brilliant 7 inning, one run, 12 strikeout performance against Tampa. His ERA on the road is 5.40; he’ s been much better at home. Austin Hedges is 5-for-20 against him but the rest of the Guardians have only faced him a combined 10 times.

Cal Quantrill goes for the G’s. Quantrill has been the model of consistency, holding opponents to three runs or less in eight of nine starts. The other start he gave up four runs. The Guardians have won 3 of his 9 starts; in the other six they scored a combined total of 11 runs. Cal has allowed six runs in his last three starts. Players currently on the Texas roster are 2-for-10 lifetime against him.

The Rangers starters in the next two games have ERA’s of 4.11 and 5.48. Fortunately the Guardians will miss their ace, Martin Perez (4-2, 1.56).

The Twins next six games are against the Yankees and Rays while the Guardians next six are against Texas and Oakland. This is an opportunity to cut into that 4.5 game lead.

If we keep on doing what we have done so far, not better nor worse....win two out of three vs losing teams and one out of three vs the big boys, and split with Minnesota and Chicago....we will win around 88 games.

If our pitching remains at the level it has lately, we could do even better.

We are 18-6 when giving up three runs or less.

We are 20-6 when we score four or more runs.

We are 2-4 when we score exactly four.

Sooo.........

Do I start Jon Gray on fantasy team today???

This has nothing to do with D-Day, but I always found it interesting,,,,
12/7/1941 - Japan attacks Pearl Harbor
12/8/1941 - Congress declares war.
12/9/1941 - Bob Feller enlisted in the USN.
Bob Feller said many times that he absolutely hated bombs.

He's coming off a great start but that 5.40 ERA in road games is concerning.
Yeah.. It seems like if I start him he'll (rightfully) get roasted.. If I don't, he will go 7 strong and win in a blowout..

Texas as a whole looks to underperforming and a couple of those folks are playing much better lately.

Think I'm going to start him.. It's win/win or lose/lose...

I assume this is a joke, but I don't get it.
