The Guardians (2-2) return to Ohio for a short two-game series in Cincy against the 2-2 Reds. Both games are afternoon games. Bieber and McKenzie will start for the G’s.
The Reds were 83-79 last year. They split their opening series in Atlanta, outscoring the Braves 19-15 in four games. As a team the Reds are hitting only .200/.274/.269/.543, but they averaged nearly five runs per game by stringng hits and walks together efficiently. The Reds have struck out 39 times and have two home runs.
The Reds are an older team other than their pitching. Joey Votto is 38. He’s 3-for-14 with 5 K’s. Mike Moustakas is 33. He’s 1-for-10 with 5 K’s. SS Kyle Farmer is 31 and Tyler Naquin is 30. Tommy Pham is 34. He’s 0-for-13 to start the season, but has walked four times. CF Nick Senzel is 2-for-14. Overall, Reds outfielders are a combined 7-for-54 with 4 RBI’s so far. And we think we have outfield problems. Steven Kwan has more hits than their entire outfield.
Players currently on the Reds' roster have a combined career batting average of .161 against Bieber. Votto has given him the most trouble; 4-for-12 with two walks.
Right-hander Kyle Mahle starts this afternoon against Bieber. Mahle broke through last year at age 26 to go 13-6 with a 3.75 ERA. In his Opening Day start in Atlanta he threw five shutout innings allowing just 3 hits and striking out 7 on 84 pitches.
Last year Mahle’s home ERA was 5.63 against 2.30 on the road. I don’t know if that was an anomaly or not. Last year Reds’ pitchers had a 4.74 ERA at home against 4.05 on the road, so it’s clear the Great American Ballpark is very hitter friendly. Last year it was the fifth most favorable park for hitters. The Guardians have 35 hits the last two games and now they have a great park to hit in.
Last year Mahle gave up 19 home runs in 78 innings at home against 5 home runs in 102 innings on the road. Opposing batters hit .270 against him at home versus .204 on the road. Their slugging percentage was over 200 points higher against Mahle in Cincinnati. GAB had the third most home runs in the majors last year. It's a launch pad. Maybe Franmil will get going if he can get the ball in the air.
The Reds have not announced a starter for tomorrow’s game, which starts at 12:35. The weather will be in the 60’s both days with a 50% chance of rain for mid-day tomorrow.
