After getting swept 4-0 and outscored 28-10 by the Tigers the battered Guardians move on to KC, where they hope to turn it around. The G's are 5-2 against the Royals this year. The Royals are in last place, 30-51 overall and 14-25 at home. Their run differential of -102 is the second worst in the A.L.
Their All-Star catcher, Salvadore Perez, is on the 10-day IL so that's a break. Also, the Guardians were off yesterday while the Royals have played seven days in a row.
Brady Singer goes against Aaron Civale tonight. Singer, 25, is in his third big league season with a career mark of 12-18 with a 4.55 ERA. This year he's 3-3, 4.30. He allowed four runs in three innings against the G's in the season's opening series.
In his last seven starts Singer has struggled, with an ERA of 5.54. His ERA at home is 4.58 and lefties have an OPS of .825 against him. Singer is very good from the windup. With none on opponents are hitting .215 with an OBP of .259. But once somebody gets on base it changes dramatically. With runners on his BAA is .338 with an on-base percentage of .393. Also, the third time batters face him they're hitting .311/.888. Obviously the key to beating Singer is to get on base and then pile on. But getting that first guy on base is tough.
Jose is 8-for-14 against Singer and Straw is 4-for-7.
Civale is having a horrible year at 2-5, 7.04. He faced the Royals in April, allowing four runs in 3.1 innings. Civale's ERA on the road is 9.90 against 4.85 at home. His lifetime ERA at Kaufman Stadium is 5.65. It's very hard to be optimistic about Civale's outing tonight. Whit Merrifield is 5-for-12 against him.
Andrew Benintendi is hammering the Guardians, going 13-for-26 against them so far this season. Salvadore Perez is out but he is 2-for-27 so it might be better if he could play. As a team the Royals are hitting only .212/.562 against Guardian pitchers. The G's are hitting .298/.833 against the Royals in seven games.
McKenzie and Plesac pitch Saturday and Sunday. Both have had good success against the Royals, especially Plesac who is 6-0.
