2022 Season - Week #5 - Chargers @ Browns - 10/9 - 1 pm on CBS

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I was on the side of pinning Jacoby inside the 10 and banking on him leading the charge with no timeouts, especially considering he failed that scenario vs NY and ATL, and got bailed out vs Carolina with a roughing penalty. I like those odds better than handing them a FG. That decision only looks good because Browns failed, not because Staley is a genius.

Or they just convert the 2 yards and the Browns never touch it again.

Again, given how the game played out, if I’m Staley I trust my offense to pick up 2 yards more than I trust my defense to keep the Browns from getting in the field goal range.

Giving him a nose tackle and a safety who isn't Grant Delpit would help. I was high on Delpit in the draft and deeply regret it.
I feel like when we are pining for a 1 technique it’s time to admit he has a lot more talent than he is making it look like

Like if the answer is “aw fuck if we only had a 1 technique!” Then I think even you needs to look in the Woods mirror

If you want all the defenders who executed like shit today, you are in for a really long post. There are times I think the scheme was exploited.

Overall I saw linebackers in the wrong place, Denzel Ward becoming Mike Williams chew toy, John Johnson making Dwayne Rudd look like a true pro, and missed tackles after missed tackles after missed tackle.

Give this franchise peak Wade Phillips and the same missed tackles and the result will be the same.

The Browns didn't gash their defense through the air and they weren't going to be running the ball with a minute and no time outs left if they had to start inside their own 20. I think it was a bad decision and the fact we win if we don't miss an easy FG certainly indicates so.

I think our FO seems to put a lot of stock in SEC players. Phillips has also been a bust. I watch a lot more B1G than SEC and I always thought Winnfield was a beast but our front office has an affinity for SEC players.

I assure you they aren't scouting the helmet, but there's also something to this. Athletic profile plus production, plus level of competition should give SEC players a leg up.

I want to kick that leg out. :chuckle:

There was pretty much nothing exciting about Jacob Phillips except that he made a number of tackles in the SEC. Was never a special talent

They’d rather give Joe Woods and Cade York hugs and pats on the butt for trying. Winning or
Losing is whatever… as long as the boys tried hard and had fun.

People can be mad at coaches and players without wanting them fired. Claiming everyone who suggests differently wants to give them hugs isn't accurate.

In fact, we want a normal reaction to setbacks and not mocked personally for a normal reaction to setbacks.

Sanitizing the thread.

Losses suck, but it is no excuse to engage in wildly inappropriate personal attacks.
I am okay with everyone attacking me personally to let out the rage that watching the Browns induces. Seriously, light me up. We all need this at this point.

There absolutely were things to be excited about with Jacob Phillips. He was one of the youngest players in the draft (born in April of 1999. The youngest player in the draft was born in November of 1999).

When you plug in his production, athletic profile, level of competition and age, you have a compelling prospect.

Here's one scouting report on him:

STRENGTHS

—Height (6'3"), weight (229 lbs), speed (4.66-second 40) prospect with a high ceiling.

—Top-tier burst when he attacks in the open field; easy-moving athlete.

—Fantastic length when he's breaking up passing windows and closing on the ball.

—Can run down ball-carriers from behind and has excellent speed and agility.

—Could become an explosive all-around linebacker with coaching and reps.

WEAKNESSES

—Needs to develop his instincts; slow to read and react at times and is more of a cleanup hitter than a leader.

—Subpar awareness and timing in coverage.

—Gets sucked into making mistakes on play action and false steps in misdirection.

—Gets by on athleticism only; hasn't developed technique to shed blockers or read and react in coverage.

—Too raw to put on the field in 2020.

Phillips had the youth and athleticism that you gamble on.

By the way, if we didn't pick him, the linebacker that we would've taken is Malik Harrison--who has been fucking terrible for Baltimore.

I still have hope that Phillips can develop into a rangy, athletic MLB. I'm a bit surprised that he's so weak at shedding blocks. He's a liability in the run game, and coming in, I thought that would be his strength.
