2023-2024 Cleveland Guardians Offseason Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Not gonna lie, when it comes to the stats like this and numbers, playing hours upon hours of something like OOTP running small market teams, you never keep the guys who are projected to produce at a value less than the pay. (Ps. Don't hate me Mad lol)

Cleveland felt his 6-7 million projection wasn't worth what they felt his production would be... They also have enough pitching depth as well to merit moving on from him as well...
Again, who is included in all this "pitching depth"? After Cantillo it gets pretty fuckin thin unless Espino is going to be ready. You believe that to be the case? I sure as hell don't. Don't mistake my discussion of this topic as panic because I'm not. I believe wholeheartedly that there is much more to happen this offseason that will make this move much more understandable.

Fans don't want a player with proven effectiveness to be cut because of "money"
Sorry. Not an organization that is going to have a below average pitcher making 6M+ sitting in Columbus waiting for an injury call up.

They have a budget and probably slight flexibility behind that number. They’ll allocate or leave the possibility of allocating that extra 6M to other improvements before they pay a AAA pitcher 6M

Bieber, Sticks, Bibee, Williams, and Allen have already establish the pecking order.

This is not a case of Cal getting dumped to make room for someone who’s not yet proven how their stuff plays out in the big leagues. This is a case of their are five guys with better stuff locked in to the rotation

To be clear, this doesn’t necessarily mean we had to cut 6.6M from our current or anticipated budget.

It just means that we do have an ultimate ceiling to a budget and that Antonetti may believe he can better allocate that 6.6M into whatever that total number is

Maybe not here, but at a more popular (and still very good) place like CTC it's clearly majority opinion.
Lol dude just big timed a message board

You also should have named me. I HATE the starting pitching depth. He didn’t even say “respected” poster, so I’d have been an easy mark.

Who the hell are we going to spend our money on? Shohei?

Quantrill was going to make an average MLB salary. But we could probably resign Zach Plesac for far less.
If they decided to allocate that money elsewhere, well, I can't blame them. Quantrill fell off a cliff last year, and they clearly couldn't fix him. They wasted 7m last year on Zunino, maybe they felt they couldn't do that 2 years in a row.

It's a retooling year whether they admit it or not. Take the season to build out Gavin, Tanner, and Logan and prep to get McKenzie back in 2025 for a run. In the meantime, we get Hunter Gaddis, Xavion Curry, Joey Cantillo, etc to fill out the rotation. Maybe roll the dice on a now- cultured Plutko, returning from Korea with newfound confidence, a nose job and some fillers make him look 20. Break Manzardo and Hunter Pence Jr in. If they can make a playoff run, awesome. But be geared to spend and make the serious run in 2025. 2025... When Shohei returns to the mound.

Because people in general (in the social media world) like to have a reason to bitch and they don't really think through the situation. They just want to holler DoLanZ iS ChEaP.
Oh they thought through the situation- and DFAing a guy like Cal,.who had a bad year, for what they paid Zunino last year looks like a cheap move. And it is- Cal doesn't look unrepairable. But the Gs can't afford a 7m lottery ticket, and if Cal continues to scuffle, they end up in the same boat next November of DFA him or not. When Ballin on A Budget you got to make some tough moves. Oh well. But for some reason, folks think it makes more sense to jump through hoops than to just admit the truth and live with it. Oh well. On to the next move.

Maybe Myles Straw will get DFA'd too.
He's going to make @ $5 million this season as the 4th OF.
You could find a 4th OF that makes less than that.
Don't you dare tease me like this. But seeing as he is owed 18.7m in future salary, I think they are stuck with him. I think a limited role, where his bat could recover a little maybe and his awesome defense shine through, could get one of the higher salaried teams to bite.

To be clear, this doesn’t necessarily mean we had to cut 6.6M from our current or anticipated budget.

It just means that we do have an ultimate ceiling to a budget and that Antonetti may believe he can better allocate that 6.6M into whatever that total number is

Exactly!

The hopeful part of me says Antonetti is going to need a big number for the outfield bat he plans to add. The realistic part of me says the hopeful part is crazy.
