2023-24 Playoff Series #1 | Game #7 | Magic @ Cavs | May 5, 2024

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm sure this has been said but the key was Mitchell getting some help. Isaac Okoro was a +24 - highest on the team. His defense was exceptional; Banchero missed 18 shots. Strus had 13 points and was a +10. He was the primary defender on Franz Wagner who was an embarassing 1-for-15. Now he's got all summer to stew about that.

LeVert was huge with 15/5/4. Two nights ago he played seven minutes, airballed a free throw, and was benched the rest of the game. Today he was possibly the key as Garland had a bad game and LeVert played 30 minutes.

Merrill had 8 points in 11 minutes, not missing a shot and he also drew a charge. Even Thompson, who played just seven minutes, had 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block.

With Allen and Wade out the Cavs needed everybody to contribute - not a lot, but something. And a lot of guys came up with something.

Garland had a rough game but hit a huge 3 in the 4th and then stole an inbounds pass and made a 2. With the way Mitchell was tearing it up all we needed was some nickels and dimes from everybody else.

The biggest thing was the way the team didn't give up when down 47-29 and under five minutes left in the half. No big runs, they just executed over and over and over until they had outscored the Magic 77-47 the rest of the way. Plus 30 in the last 29 minutes.

It was like watching an arm wrestling match where one guy is losing but inch by inch he works his way back to neutral and then slowly forces his opponents' arm down. The Cavaliers were relentless.

How do we find ways to continually be relentless? I have no doubt that will show up. I have no doubt Cleveland will show up. - Donovan Mitchell

This year Mitchell averaged 5.8 free throw attempts per game. Today he had 17. He forced his way to the rim again and again and the Magic couldn't stop him without fouling. Just a magnificent performance.

IMO Mitchell is the best guard the Cavs have ever had, better than Kyrie, Mark Price, and Austin Carr. And the last two games were two of the best playoff performances a Cavs' player has ever had, right up there with the best of LeBron, considering the quality of the defense he was up against.

Those 9 rebounds against a team with three 6'10" guys on the floor all the time and Jarrett Allen out were huge. Mobley was busy blocking shots and contesting missed shots so we needed others to get rebounds, and Donovan did that, too. The guy carried this team over the finish line.

But now I think the burden of following LeBron and the past disappointments are over. Nobody expects them to beat Boston. This is an opportunity with limited downside.

I think they’ll play loose. Pressure off, Knicks series finally in the rear view mirror, there’s more hope of success rather than fear of failure.
Yep, they're playing with house money now. They can play loose knowing that nobody expects a win. This season has been a success no matter what happens from here on out.

Serena has gotten better and grown on me. Thought she was a little stiff and widen to begin, but seems to be relaxing more. How long has she been here now? 3 years?

I never get the feeling that Mitchell thinks it's about him as an individual. I truly think nothing matters to him but the team when he's out there. He leads without ever being condescending, he takes complete responsibility when he doesn't play well and doesn't try to blame others. And he really takes joy in his teammates playing well, even if he's not getting credit for an assist.

Not to mention playing while injured and never using an injury as an excuse.

I'm not saying this to put down anyone else, but just to point out that kind of leadership is just rare period. He's exceptional in that regard.

Sent a text to some guys on here a bit ago about just how lucky we are to have a player like Don in Cleveland, skill set, maturity, leadership etc... He is the total package.
