With a four-game win streak in tow and having won 6 of 8 the streaking Cavaliers return home for the second night of a back-to-back against an even hotter Miami Heat. The Heat have won 8 of 9 and are 9-5 overall. In addition, they were off last night while the Cavs had to play an overtime game in Philadelphia and then travel.
Garland and Strus played 44 and 43 minutes last night, so the Cavs’ starting guards will be worn out. Everything points to a Miami win. However, if Mitchell or LeVert can return from injuries it would help tremendously.
The Heat are led by Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, and Tyler Herro, each averaging between 21-23 ppg. Duncan Robinson averages 15 points and nobody else is in double figures. Kevin Love is averaging 17 minutes per game. The Heat are only 24th in scoring so obviously they’re getting it done with defense. They rank 7th in opponents points per game. This should be a low scoring contest.
Injuries will be a big factor as Herro is out and Adebayo is a game time decision. Love is out for personal reasons. If Adebayo can’t go it would be huge since Herro is already out so the Heat would be missing two of their top three scorers.
Mitchell and LeVert are listed as game time decisions. The availability of Mitchell, LeVert, and Adebayo will have a lot to say about the outcome of this one.
If Adebayo plays the matchup between him and Jarrett Allen will be a key factor. Allen is coming off two great games against Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid.
If Adebayo is out then Jimmy Butler, age 34, will have to carry an even bigger load. Butler is off to a great start, averaging 47% overall and 42% on 3’s. Duncan Robinson is shooting 43% on 3’s an averaging 15 ppg, while 37-year-old Kyle Lowry comes off the bench to hit 43% from deep.
Miami only averages 110 ppg, so if Herro and Bam are both out they will be really challenged offensively as they will be missing 46 points and 15 rebounds.
Defensively the Heat rank 8th in opponents’ points in the paint per game but they are 24th in opponents 3-point percentage. It’s generally better to shoot from outside against them, but if Bam is out the Cavs will have a big advantage in the paint.
Pretty much everybody on the Heat is between 6’5” and 6’10” with the exceptions of Kyle Lowry and Dru Smith, who come off the bench.
