The "White Flag" White Sox come to town to finish their season series with the Guardians, who were also sellers at the trade deadline, although not to the extent of the Sox. The Sox traded starters Lance Lynn and Lucas Giolito as well as relievers Reynaldo Lopez, Joe Kelly, and Kendall Graveman, who leads the team in appearances with 45. They also traded Guardian killer Jake Burger, who has 5 home runs and 9 RBI's in 10 games against the Guardians this year.

The Guardians traded Aaron Civale, Amed Rosario, and Josh Bell, of course, but only the Civale trade is likely to hurt the team's chances of winning the rest of the way. You could argue that trading Josh and Amed made the team better immediately.

The White Sox are now 43-67 in what has been a disaster of a season for a team that many picked to win the division. They are 20-38 on the road and have won just 3 of their last 15 games. It's a dumpster fire of a ball club right now that just got worse with practically half their pitching staff being moved last week. But they are 6-4 against the Guardians this year and need just one win to take the season series, for whatever importance that has.

The Guardians are 2.5 games out of first place with 53 to play, so there is hope, despite the fact that they have yet to name the starting pitcher for Saturday or Sunday.

The Sox are averaging 3.8 runs per game since the break and they just lost their top OPS guy since the break in Burger (.868). He's also hit 6 of their 17 home runs since the break. Eloy Jimenez and Tim Anderson have been hot, hitting .327 and .324 since the break, but nobody else has hit much.

Against the Guardians this year Andrew Vaughn is hitting .300/.877, Luis Robert is at .286/.848, and Yasmani Grandall .360/.840. The Sox have averaged 3.9 runs per game against the Guardians this year, but without Burger they won't be quite as potent.

Their biggest problem this weekend will be pitching, having traded five pitchers. Their bullpen will be thin so the key will be to get their starters out of the game as soon as possible even if we don't score a lot of runs. Work the pitch count and get to the bullpen.

Logan Allen faces Mike Clevinger tonight in a rematch of last Saturday's game where Clevinger dominated the Guardians, allowing no runs and two hits in five innings. Allen allowed five runs in six innings. Clevinger is having a nice season with a 4-4 record and a solid 3.59 ERA in 13 starts. As usual, he's missed time to injuries. He and Aaron Civale are having similar seasons. I'm surprised Clev didn't get traded.

Clevinger has been great at home (2.10 ERA) but not good on the road (4.78) so maybe the Guardians will be able to scrape some runs together tonight. In two starts against Cleveland this year his ERA is 1.64; he likes pitching against his old mates (although most of the current Guardians weren't on the team when Clev was here). Clevinger is a battler - opponents are just 2-for-29 with two out and RISP. He bears down when he has a chance to get out of an inning with runners in scoring position.

Allen is 4-4 with a 3.70 ERA - pretty good for a rookie. The Sox tagged him for eight hits and two home runs in his last start as Anderson ambushed him to start the game and Vaughn took him deep as well.

The White Sox, with a right-handed heavy batting order, have feasted on Allen in his three starts against them. As a team they are hitting .364/.997. He does not match up well at all. Robert is 5-for-9 off Allen, Anderson 4-for-9, Grandall and Vaughn are 3-for-9.

This game will be a big test for Allen since the Sox will be facing him for the fourth time and they have pretty much owned him so far. He needs to figure out how to get these talented right-handed hitters out. The Sox's team OPS is 42 points higher against lefties than righties.

The Guardians have not named starters for the next two games. Michael Kopech will go for the Sox on Saturday. He is 4-10, 4.49 ERA in 20 starts. The Guardians got three runs in five innings off him last weekend. They don't have a starter for Sunday yet.

There could be a lot of runs on both sides this weekend, especially by the Sox. They've hit Allen hard and will be facing a lot of relievers or minor league call-ups the next two days. The Guardians are averaging just over four runs per game since the break. Both teams will be auditioning young talent. The series is meaningless to the Sox so they will be loose. The Guardians need to win as many as possible to stay fairly close to the Twins and hope that Bieber, McKenzie, and Quantrill (or at least a couple of them) can make it back by September to combine with Williams, Bibee, and Allen to lead a September surge.

Thanks again Wham. I don't think any of the rest of us would go into such detail. You're the man and my father-in-law once told me that if you do a job right once then it's your job forever.

I must say I like my job, even if it doesn't pay. Thanks for the encouragement.
