2023 Summer League Champs

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Isaiah Mobley is making the progression the Cleveland Cavaliers wanted.
Emoni Bates, this year's second-round pick, continued his consistent play in Las Vegas with his fifth straight double-digit scoring game for Cleveland, finishing with 20 points and seven rebounds. Bates had four points in overtime.
Noah Clowney, one of Brooklyn's first-round picks, was scoreless in seven minutes while going 0-for-4 from the floor.

As of right now we have 6 or 7 projects that can fill out the middle to the bottom of the roster. This will be very important as our core gets into the next contracts. If any of them turn into a rotation or better player; we're gonna be in great f'n shape.

Bates
Porter
Merrill (vet min guy)
Mobley
Bates
Diop
Travers

All will fill a need at some point.
This is optimistic. I don't know that a guy like Diop ever comes over, and if Travers doesn't develop a shot, he's going to wash out in the pros. Merrill is 27 already and is extremely limited defensively. Mobley is unlikely to be an offensive focal point in any NBA unit outside of garbage time and he's currently bellow average in the other aspects of the game he'd have to be at least average in to stick on another NBA roster.

Even guys like Bates and Porter, who I could see becoming second unit guys one day, need to put in work against better competition than what we're seeing right now before I'd feel comfortable with that prediction.

I was trying to explain summer league to my 19 year old daughter who was in the living room with a friend. After I explained it she looks at me and says..."so basically it's extended try out?". For the life of my i couldt come up with the words why she was wrong, lol
Y'know what I think?
I think they're just doing it for the Money.

Seriously, they're just trying to cash in on the publicity surrounding those high draft picks. The nerve!

It's not try outs because the guys who play the best in summer league are usually the least likely to make the team. G-league guards who show out are a dime a dozen and rarely get a shot at the NBA because of summer league.

I don't think that's true -- it's just that "show out" in summer league doesn't correspond to the number of point you have. Disorganized basketball is super guard heavy at every level (even among NBA-talent, see for example the All-Star Game or the US Olympic teams). Guards who show the ability to play the game in a way that translates to the NBA can and do get G-league invites and two-way contracts based on summer league play.

So is it true that you get 3 two-way contracts this year? (in which case, I assume it would be Mobley/Bates/Porter)?

Would be nice to have Merrill on a two-way. Perhaps that means Mobley or Bates makes it onto the main roster?

merrill has a guaranteed contract so you don't need to worry about him

Amazing that we have a 102 page thread on Summer league
Because we're in the championship, baby! This may be the best summer league team we'll have for a long time, so might as well enjoy it.

There's been a lot of discussion about how these summer league games mean absolutely nothing when it comes to predicting future NBA success, and while that's true and valid...you know what these games did do? Substantially increase my interest in watching Charge games this year. And that's an accomplishment in itself. The fact that most of these guys besides Travers will be playing on that team is good publicity for our G-league affiliate imo.

Yes. We all say Summer league is pointless and not to put any stock in the outcome yet we continue to follow with great interest much like we do with the Spring training phenoms in baseball over the years.

You can tell watching these games that Isaiah remade his body a bit and he’s feeling the swagger that comes along with it. There’s absolutely no way last year that he tries some of the dunks he’s attempted in the last few games, and the taunt to boot was awesome. I’d love to give him some run as a rotation big to give him some seasoning during the regular season.

That is incorrect..

Merrill has a non-guaranteed contract that guarantees on 1/10/2024..

So if the Cavs need to get further away from the tax or open up another roster spot, Merrill is likely the first one to go..
