2024 Guardians Regular Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
That means we need to be above 500 come end of May or we just plain out suck.....

Wouldn't it be Stephan and Karinchak to the 60-day DL???? Or, am I missing something as I have been out of town the last few days and only checking in occasionally.

Yet, for me, instead of trading from our strengths in depths (MIF and such), we just get roster folder as these are easy cuts when guys come back or when we trade away a Bieber type for the right type of player.

Well I am curious since they announced trades but haven't announced the actual roster yet... I feel like they may be trying another move...

Straw and DDLS getting DFA'D created the two spots, we shall see who gets what treatment.

Are Stephan and Karinchak already on the 60 day IL?

Nope, they haven't announced it yet

@petes999 as well

It felt like they said maybe Cade Smith as the last guy in the bullpen... I feel like since Stephan went down they are trying to get another bullpen arm that's not a depth piece...

It is just timing of things. Yes, it should have happened already but teams had to clear those two guys for their earlier start times. Our final roster doesn't have to be announced until later.

I assume they are still looking for that external reliever vs Smith, but as teams had to finalize their rosters already, don't expect a miracle late minute announcement. And, technically, Cookie doesn't have to be added for a few days, till his start. But, again, if they haven't been willing to give up what it takes for a real reliever to go for it this year (market price), they are still trying to hold onto what they have for the future.

The favorable early schedule plays into our hands because it gives us time to get Williams, Karinchak, and Hentges healthy before the tougher opponents come along. It also gives Vogt time to get a long look at Freeman in center, Rocchio at short, and the rookies in the bullpen and make any necessary changes.

Heck, by the time we've played 68 games Manzardo could be up.

On the potential downside, there will be injuries in the first 68 games to guys that are healthy now.

They will add Cookie to start the season because of his MiLB contract setup...

I just feel like they are wanting to do another move... Extensions, if they will do any, will come out today as well...

I think it is remotely possible we DFA Karinchak at this point.

He's going to the IL... Though I get how some people would feel that way with how his 23 went

The Athletic's preview of the Twins:

Despite an offseason spent slashing payroll by $30 million and losing key veterans Sonny Gray, Jorge Polanco and Kenta Maeda, the Twins are the clear front-runners in the American League Central and well-positioned for their fourth division title in six seasons.

Much of that depends on the trio of Carlos Correa, Byron Buxton and Royce Lewis staying healthy, but the injury question marks don’t end there. Alex Kirilloff, Chris Paddack and Brock Stewart are also health risks, and the Twins have lost key arms Jhoan Duran, Caleb Thielbar and Anthony DeSclafani to spring training injuries.

This is the most talented team in the division, with the star power and depth to rank among the league’s top five lineups and pitching staffs, but they need Duran to get healthy, Correa/Buxton/Lewis to stay healthy and someone to replace Gray atop the rotation alongside ace Pablo López.

From Sports Illustrated:

[Anthony] DeSclafani is dealing with forearm and elbow injuries, according to multiple reports, issues that have plagued him since last season. Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey told reporters on Monday that DeSclafani will see a specialist to determine next steps. The Star Tribune reported that could include elbow surgery.

That means the Twins’ pitching depth will be put to the test right away. DeSclafani was brought in to compete for the fifth spot in the rotation with North St. Paul's Louie Varland, who had stints with the big league club as a starter and reliever last season but spent most of his time in Triple-A.

So their #5 starter spent most of last year in AAA and their #4 starter (Paddack) pitched 5 innings last year and 22 innings the year before that. Their #2 starter (Joe Ryan) was 11-10 with a 4.51 ERA last year.

Pablo Lopez and Bailey Ober are good, Ryan is medicre, and I don't know what to expect from Paddack and Varland.

By the way, it's been seven years since Byron Buxton has played more than 92 games. Correa had an OPS+ of 96 last year. Yeah, hope he can stay healthy - they really need that bat.

I'm just not buying the Twins, not with that rotation. Buxton can't stay on the field and Correa is JAG.

It was reported he is going on the IL. Still seems the most likely scenario, especially since his salary for 2024 is now guaranteed... Unless they cut him last night and it hasn't been announced, which would be extremely unlikely considering they announced these last minute transactions for pitchers earlier.

Edit - there are quite a few cuts around the league being announced right now... Eric Haase has been DFA'd for example.

Always liked Eric and wanted them to keep him around when they had him last season. Or was that the 22 season?

Yeah there is a lot going on... some decent names though... Emmanuel Rivera is one I am curious where he ends up...

He had an amazing spring training too... Pretty sure he's getting claimed. A's?

I wouldn't say the A's but I don't see why a C needing team wouldn't at least look at him...

And, I think the timing of a contract extension is coming to a close. They don't want it to interfere with the actual opening game. Thus, It is usually a few days before the season opens.

Recent
Clase - April 2, 2022 (Royals opener on April 7)
Ramirez - April 6th 2022 (just before boarding plan)
Straw - was April 9th ... so not always as he was last in line that year (but usually before)
Gimenez - March 28, 2023 - (March 30th opened in Seattle)

Even if you go in the way back machine
Kluber April 4, 2015 (April 6th opener)

I know there wasn't a perfect guy to sign (other than Bibee), as McK is always injured, Naylor is 1B and somewhat injured, Kwan do we want him in LF long-term?, Bieber too close to FA, .... But, it is a bit disappointing not solidifying our base for a sustained playoff run.
