2024 Minor League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
@BimboColesHair
Just curious. Since the Guardians won the lottery, and were awarded the 1st pick in the draft, and extra bonus pool $'s, have they made any adaptations? Like extra scouts, crosscheckers, for deeper dives.
Or are their mechanics staying the same like any other draft?
2/3rds or so work has been done on the top of top end. Assume they have been following the top players for 2/3 years and HS for 1/2 years. These spring games are to cross-check and see if they are making positive changes from winter work. Doubt much will change the flow already happening with extra guys that you don’t know well. Sure Chernoff and Chris will see a few WF, OSU and WVU games with maybe a dinner (or chance bumping into someone(s) depending on rules) …. and maybe they call an old retired scouting friend to tag along as a 10th opinion but not some general scout/cross checker off the street.

BUT, the work of choosing first is less than choosing 16th as you know your limited pool to focus on (so more focused time on 4-7 guys than 8-12 who May drop). You just need to get it right which is based on what you supposedly already put together whether 1st or 16th. Think the biggest change is to look into their backgrounds more to avoid an embarrassment like Franco as the pick sb one of our 3-4 headliners in short order.

All of the foundational work up to and including the post season of 2023 has been done, cross checked and rechecked by a cadre of insiders and service providers. Anyone that scores (on a unique and logical scale) is given for further investigation and evaluation.. There are two competing needs to be considered...

1. When you know you're going to be selecting in the 16 to 28 range.. usually you know that about the first eight are almost assuredly going to be gone by the time your selection comes around.. This orders a priority (cost based) for the number of games these guys get seen in person.. The interviews with the seventh grade teammate and any other rock to be turned over.. is left in place.. In short, you rely on outside sources more than you should..

2. When you have a top five pick.. everything matters.. including that seventh grade teammate.. and any & all rock turning etc. You can never be too sure what "mature" 14 year old is going to capture a 19 year old prospect's eye.. and the repercussions thereof.. It's a six million dollar decision!! Psycho-babbling and other forms of poppycock are not out of the question..

At the end of the day.. a short list is created for either level of pick. The guy on top is a consensus favorite for good reason... The guys not on top could be for any number of reasons.. Beware of the guy who "falls", there usually is a reason.. (there are three types of reasons: good, bad and any).. When certainty has been achieved.. "Objectively" start over to see if you arrive at the same result...

One note of caution: saving money for a later signing.. happens.. and you don't have to like it..

Thoughts?

Top 100 list

35 DeLauter (55 FV)
62 Rocchio (55 FV)
84 Manzardo (50 FV)

I don't believe for one second that Manzardo's future value will be less than Rocchio's. I understand that Rocchio plays a more valuable position, but Mazardo's offensive potential and performance are vastly superior. Cleveland's top prospect list is 1) DeLauter 2)Manzardo 3)Espino 4)Brito 5)Velasquez. If you don't like Espino's chances because of the injuries then that's understandable. Just take him out, move everyone up one and put Chourio at #5.

@Niklex316 - I pulled ya over here to talk about Alex Mooney, a guy I know little about overall, but here it goes.

1. I kept trying to keep him in my top 28 posted HERE... But he kept getting pushed out. If you told me he was your 20-30ish best prospect, I would say OK. If you told me he was higher, I'd ask OK, why?
2. He is a top 30 guy for me. I hope/expect him to beat beginner A ball, and think we need to see how he handles better competition. He is aggressive on the base paths... Are those real steals?.. Caught enough to wonder. How much pop is there, can he take semi-consistent walks? See you in A+/AA...
3. Defensively, he plays SS/2B and some 3B so far. Is he good at it? IDK, stats look OK... Cleveland likes middle infielders.
4. Power... Can he hit dingers or close enough?..

Things I know. Mooney was signed for a million bucks as a 7th round pick (231,000 slot value) and from what I watched/read on the internet. I really like his overall approach/committed swing at the plate. Also, he seems like he maybe a bit of a flashy/emotional ballplayer.

Comps?... Cord Phelps, Jason Donald to Jason Kipnis and Joey Wendle says hi. I am reminded A LOT of a fella fireplug named Tyler Holt as well. He really needs a challenging environment before knowing much IMO.

Here is Pipeline top 30. But, like everything take it for the paper (lack there of) written on as they dropped Campbell totally off the list ... but Val is #5?

Also, look at Aleman .. (how can you sit 96-99 but average 96? if most are 96 then he sits 96 not 96-99).

Aleman's stuff improved in shorter stints, especially in the second half of 2023. His fastball averaged 96 mph for the year and sat at 96-99 while reaching 101 with a flat approach angle and tough carry. His mid-80s slider became sharper and was a wipeout pitch at its best.

I like that top 5, though Rocchio is too low for me. I think a distant #3 is fair because the rest have a lot to prove. The upside on Espino is obviously exciting but his health isn't and he said his goal for this season is to pitch in one game so it is tough to be encouraged. Nobody says high variance like him - completely lights out when healthy with a chance to never pitch in one MLB game.

Thanks! Rocchio isn't in my top 5 because his ceiling is low. IMO, all of DeLauter, Manzardo, Espino, Brito, Velasquez and Chourio have much better ceilings. I do agree that Rocchio is a safe bet to be a decent MLB player and that has value, but we're talking about prospects and projection. At least I am. lol

Edited to add that if Chourio develops power close to his brother's level then we have a top 5 prospect in all of baseball, and maybe the top prospect. It will be exciting to see how his development goes.

The younger brother Chourio is exactly the kind of "prospect" teams like the Guardians trade for before they start moving up on one of many prospect lists..

w/r to your comment.. yes, Jaison Chourio has the potential to be someone special.. Comparing Jaison to his brother, Jaison is a bigger guy and has a LOT of the same qualities other than fleet feet. There was a video of Jaison swinging the bat posted on one of the Cleveland Guardian sites (I think Next Year in Cleveland)..that showed Jaison's sweet LH'd swing as he drove the ball with ease over the RF wall.. effortlessly and smoothly..
