2024 Season | Series #8 | Red Sox @ Guardians | April 23-25, 2024

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm at work and watched the Columbus game on MiLBTV and trust me when I say that nothing has changed with Straw. It will be interesting to see what happens when Valera returns. Either Straw or Noel needs to go somewhere else.

You just know at some point they're gonna hit a rough patch, but damn if this start isn't impressive. Can't give the players and staff enough credit.

I see Will the thrill was 2-3 tonight. He's starting to find his groove.

What an impressive win! Beating Houck is very, very tough and they did it tonight with contributions all over the place.

Brennan was 2-for-3, including a double that led to the first run. Freeman had an RBI single on an 0-2 pitch from Houck, stole a base, and made some routine fly balls into pretty entertaining catches in center field. He also drew a walk and scored from first on a double.

Jose hit an opposite field home run batting right-handed for the first time I can remember. Manning was wondering if he ever did it before. And it came on a 98 mph fastball. Wow!

Gaddis is still unscored on! He has settled into the 8th inning role vacated by Trevor Stephan and is killing it! The bullpen was lockdown again; 2.2 innings, 1 hit, no runs.

Fry made an amazing pick backhanded on a ball in the dirt and then picked off the runner at first. He also drew a walk in the middle of a rally.

But the biggest story was Ben Lively, who has now pitched 11.1 innings against the Red Sox allowing just 3 runs; 2 on solo homers and one on a balk when he neglected to tell the umpire he would be pitching from the windup. So I'm calling it 2 earned runs in 11.1 innings; a 1.59 ERA.

If he can keep this up we may have lucked into the most valuable thing in baseball - a solid starting pitcher on a minimum contract.

Guardians take the season series with two games to play. The Sox now have 13 earned runs in 5 games against Guardians' pitching.

I think that rough pach is called Atlanta....but I hope I am wrong.

Who cares, win 1 more against Boston and all we need is 1 win against Atlanta, and we are still rocking and rolling.

I finally found a replay of Jose's homer. Opposite field, off a 98-mph fastball. Right-handed, which is his less powerful side.

I’m surprised that there are 8 ballparks with the right-field foul pole more than 360’ away.
There are some where it's 340 or 330 down the line and then the fence moves steeply deeper. Jose's homer was 20 feet off the foul line or so.

From my first video, the eight ball parks are AZ, Boston, Cubs, Colorado, KC, Dodgers, Angels, and St. Louis.

Game 2 preview:

Having clinched the season series the Guardians will send Carlos Carrasco to the hill against a yet-to-be-announced starter for the Red Sox. In the game following Houck's start last week they went with a bullpen day so that might be the plan.

Carlos is 1-1 with a 3.44 ERA. Each of his four starts has been a little better than the previous one. Five days ago in Boston he held the Sox to 2 runs in 5.1 innings.

Current members of the Red Sox are hitting .225/.561 against Carlos. In 40 AB's they have one extra base hit and one RBI.

The Guardians have now won 8 of 9. The Red Sox have scored 13 earned runs on the Guardians in five games. With their starting first baseman Triston Casas (.247/.857) out they started Bobby Dalbec who came in to Tuesday's game 1-for-32. He's now 1-for-34. They really lack depth, at least at first base.

They lack depth at shortstop, too, as they started an outfielder, Cedenne Rafaela, at short. Kind of a reverse Tyler Freeman. After going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in the leadoff position he's hitting .154/.469.

The Sox are tied for 3rd in home run percentage but 13th in runs per game. It seems like they can't string hits together to score; it's long ball or nothing. I think the Bally guys said they score 46% of their runs on homers. Tyler O'Neill is a great example; he has 7 home runs and 8 RBI's despite hitting .308.

So if Cookie can keep them in the yard and the Guardians can get to their bullpen it could be another W. The Guardians have now scored 14 earned runs in 21.1 innings against the Red Sox bullpen; a 5.90 ERA.

The Red Sox definitely put an All-Star infield out there tonight.

At first base they had Bobby Dalbec, who is 1-for-34 after tonight's game.

At second base they had Enmanuel Valdez, hitting .152 with an on-base percentage below the Mendoza line. He's struck out 22 times in 66 AB's. Also, he failed to turn an easy double play when a perfect throw apparently got stuck in his glove or he failed to get a good grip on the ball. Then in the 8th he allowed Freeman to score from first on a double when once again he couldn't transfer the ball from his glove to his hand successfully.

At shortstop they had the aforementioned outfielder, Rafaela, who is hitting .154 with an OBP of .200. At least he didn't make any errors.

At third they have Pablo Reyes, who came in 8-for-48 with 16 strikeouts.

Who would you rather have at 1B, Josh Naylor or Bobby Dalbec? At second base, Andres Gimenez or Enmanuel Valdez? Rocchio or Rafaela at short? Jose or Pablo Reyes at 3rd?

Hmmm...a lot of tough calls there.

Their outfield is better with O'Neill, Duran, Abreu, and Refsnyder. They're all hitting between .270 and .308. Refsnyder was 3-for-3 tonight to push his average up to .438 (7-for-16). He's 33 with a career BA of .244 and 14 career home runs.

I like their catching with Wong and McGuire. Those a couple of good bats. But their infield is horrid and their bullpen very suspect.

God I am so proud of this team how they responded again in the late innings after being down against a quality pitcher Haulk. What about Lively too hitting his spots and Freeman at cf. I am in love. I expect us to regress but that doesnt take away from the magic(no pun intended) that is happening with a rook coach
