2024 Season | Series #9 | Guardians @ Braves | April 26-28, 2024

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm impressed with Freeman, and IMO so should the board be. (Disclaimer: I've been higher on Freeman than almost every other prospect we've had for years.)

He is definitely not Straw...an unfair comparison)... but he has been at least average in center, (3 DRS) surprising for never playing it. Only Julio Rodriguez has more. Quick first step, quick reaction to mistakes, and knows the situation.

Offensively, he has maybe been our most unlucky hitter.

On the Guardians he ranks:

1st in EV
1st in EV 50
2nd in Barrel% (Nails)
1st in Hard hit rate.

His K rate is solid, his BB rate has improved, and he doesn't hit a ton of ground balls.

And yet, his BABIP is .230.
I have always liked him as a hitter.

How does he have 3 DRS on the year? That should be a clear example to everyone as to how wonky certain defensive metrics can be.

Oddly enough we might have Valbuena's clone in Columbus right now. Any guesses who I'm referring to?
Tena

edit: I didn't read your answer before posting.. like minds??? with that sawed off follow through and relatively "stiff" defensive profile..

I'm kinda surprised, too. To get DRSs you have to have some more difficult plays, routine flies dont matter, unless you drop one.

Freeman has made a few, and does have two throws to the plate for outs.

Interestingly, Laureano is at -2 in CF in only 36 innings, but +2 in RF in 95 innings. CF is a whole different ball game than in the corners. Brennan is +1 in RF in 128 innings. Kwan is at 3 in LF in 243 innings.

By far, our best defensive lineup is Kwan, Freeman, Laureano.

Never been one to put too much stock into defensive metrics. Especially short track records. I think Tyler is playing a damn fine CF and if he can add some power to his game I'm all for it, but right now I don't think that increase will be anything significant. I hope I'm wrong and that doesn't mean he can't be a good ML player though. Actually, he's already a pretty good ML player and he's certainly going to improve even if only marginally.

If Laureano isn't hitting lefties then him and his best defense is unplayable.
I see very little use for Ramon at this time, but who would you replace him with? You don't want someone like Rodriguez promoted only to play sparingly. You could probably go with Manzardo and allow him and Josh to share 1B/DH duties, but you'd be removing the DH spot for guys like Ramirez when they need a day off their feet but Vogt wants to keep his bat in the lineup. It would also severely cut into Florial's AB. If not Florial then Brennan and I don't think we want to do that just yet. I have no clue.

I don't see Florial or Laureano as reasons to hold up the natural growth of your younger talent.

If they aren't producing, kick them to the curb.

IMO Rodriguez and Manzardo though playing different positions and handedness, both "fill" the same spot. Meaning no matter which one you call up, the DH spot gets much more clogged. Because of that and service time stuff...

Laureano ain't going anywhere for another month or so unfortunately. Ramon is a better ballplayer than this IMO, so maybe he can get back on track. But I don't know, maybe he's cooked.. When the business end of it isn't an issue, I hope we pull up Manzardo and consider bringing up JRod at the same time. One thing that is nice about JRod, is he still has his options so he can marinate until he's kicked the door completely down. Maybe one of the guys who are running out of time/options like Tena, Valera or Noel gets the first crack. Guess we'll see.

I think we're in a position where our team is too good to give the kids the cushiest, kindest landing spot possible.

A rebuilding team can afford to play a youngster every day. I don't think we can.

I'd let JRod take Laureano's AB's. Even if he has to split time with Will Brennan, he's got his shot. He has to produce in limited AB's and earn more, or he gets kicked aside for the next man up.

Manzardo is probably going to have to play some DH. He can split time at 1B with Josh, but he's going to have to perform at DH as a youngster, which is hard to do.

there will be the concern regarding the salary being "wasted".. almost $ 6MM to go with Straw's complete waste... Good thing this isn't houston where they're contemplating droping Abreu and his $ 35MM over the next two years..

What would you say if I told you a certain red, white, and blue colored team offered him more money than Houston gave him.

A few thoughts:

1) When they traded for Manzardo, the FO knew that he was limited to 1B/DH to go with Naylor. They knew that when he reached Cleveland there would be very little rotation thru the DH spot.

2) I've said this several times, but once more with feeling...Laureano is a solid player who almost always starts off very slow. Throughout his career his wRC+ has been 112 after April. His career wRC+ vs LHP is about 120. And he is one of the best defensive RFs in baseball.

Just like they knew the situation when they traded for Manzardo, the FO knew exactly what they were getting when they signed Laureano. One month, which they should have expected up front, doesn't change that.

3) Manzardo will be here soon, and the one to go will probably be Florial. Florial doesn't make enough contact to be a viable regular on a contending team. He is an average defensive player and not good in center, illustrated by the fact that Vogt has used him only 42 innings in the field. He has basically been a LH DH. (We have one coming.) Dont let his .364 BABIP fool you.

Its not even certain that anybody will claim him if ( when) he is put on waivers.

4) Time has run out for Tena, Valera, and Noel....unless an utter disaster happens in Cleveland. They won't be in this org next year, unless nobody else wants them, or, in Valeras case, he gets another option year.
