Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I find it odd that while praising Kwan's performance thus far we are now criticizing his approach. A good portion of his value comes from being patient and carrying a very good OBP. Personally, and I don't care if anyone agrees with me or not, I don't think he's going to do anymore damage with the first strike compared to the third strike. He's just not that type of hitter. Now somebody like OGon should swing at every first strike he sees so he doesn't look stoopid chasing a slider 3ft off the plate for the third strike. In order to do that he has to recognize hittable pitches early in the count and I'm not sure that's he's capable. If you want to talk about hand-eye coordination then he's your guy. Can't recognize pitches for shit and swings at just about everything while rarely walking yet somehow manages to carry good BA's.
We're just talking about how to turn a good approach into a great one and thus IMPROVE, something which you don't seem to think is possible with Kwan.

Since I think he has one of the best approaches in the league made evident by his .361 OBP I don't see him improving his .359 SLG much. He's not a physical hitter. He's 5'9" and 170lbs at 24. He's doesn't appear to have the frame/structure to add much muscle. Maybe I'm wrong and boy would I love to be.

Gimenez is 5'11 160 supposedly. You don't need to be big to juice one with aggression. Kwan hit 12 HRs in 341 PA last year. He likely has it in him to get into a few, and regardless of if it results in HRs, it will result into less soft contact as well as something to fear when your plan is to lob over some early strikes. This can actually get him MORE walks in theory.

In my mind, Kwan doesn't have a lot of room to improve outside of things like experience teaching him when he can add more power and other stuff like that. Experience is the thing he lacks and it still can teach him a lot and can improve his game. He isnt gonna increase his speed nor strength much more.

The number one thing...the foundation of all hitting...is the ability to make contact. Everything else follows from that.

Too say that a kid who begins with an elite foundation can't do this or can't do that...or, most importantly, can't become an impact player...defies history.

The exact same thing was said about Brantley....and Jose Ramirez...and Tony Gwynn...and Rod Carew...and dozens of others.

Now, Kwan might not...probably wont...end up coming close to them, but the one thing he has in common with all of them is a preternatural level of making contact.

Not one of our so-called corner outfield prospects with 'upside' comes close to having the same level of ability as Kwan to do the most important thing a hitter needs to do.
