The most exciting punter since Ray Guy deserves his own thread--

In today's coach interview "Fre-K" seems to be willing to hand the holder duties to a different player if Gillian doesn't get the hang of it, but says that's not the case right now.

On punters serving as holders in today’s NFL whereas QBs or WRs with the ‘best hands’ would fill the role in an earlier era:
“That is a great question. I lived that. I was in Dallas when we went to Seattle for a playoff game in 2006 when our backup quarterback became the starting quarterback halfway through that year. Now, that is a good question from the standpoint of the holder, the punter, the kicker and the snapper. They spend all of practice together so they are usually able to get the most work together with each other. Just to answer your question bluntly and honestly, that is the reason. That is the reason that most people in the league do that. I am not saying it always is the right thing to do. Certainly, if we did not feel confident that would happen, we would explore other avenues. At the present time, we think that is the best way to go.”

Priefer said Gillan’s ability as a holder -- something he’d never done until he signed with the Browns -- was a “big factor” in the final decision.
“We saw that he was raw, but he was talented and he has great hands,” Priefer said. “A very good athlete as you guys know and in the decision-making process, it was a big deal. He showed enough in that last preseason game and throughout the spring and summer that he has the ability to do it."

The Scottish Hammer was one of the lone bright spots on Sunday

It's pretty easy to see that he's a natural athlete, not just a guy with a big leg. That's probably why he's progressed so well as a holder.

But can he kick extra points?

Not really, in college he was 46/74 on field goals and 77/85 on the shorter extra points made.

That said, he is probably the best backup fg kicker in the country.

"Funny story," he said. "I actually had a pretty fun night with the boys, accepted the scholarship and woke up in the morning and forgot I did."

Fuck, I am going to buy a punter's jersey, aren't I?

Scots gonna Scot.

Scottish Hammer looks to be the real deal. What a great find by the Browns.

This guy fucks.

When you look at the punting average stats you think we made a mistake, 42.3, towards the bottom in the league. But his net is 41.7, middle in the league. So that seems just ok. But he leads the league in returned kicks with just 1 of 11. So that is very good.

But stats are deceiving, if it seems like all of his kicks are inside the 20, because they almost all are. In 11 kicks he has zero touchbacks, that is nice, but a whopping league leading 8 kicks inside the 20.

That is 73%, 2nd is 6, and that is GB's punter (35%) and Det's punter (50%) And Det's punter has an average of 40.8 and net of only 39.3 because half of his kicks have been inside the 20. So its insane how high Jamie's net is considering 3/4ths of his kicks have been inside the 20.

He hasn't really had to boom many punts yet and the fact that only one has been returnable is a good sign.

He can still get a ton of air under the shorter punts giving our coverage team plenty of time to get down there to defend - a rare skill.

This game he had only 1 kick 30 yards in where he could boom it and went for 47 yards returned 5 yards, all 5 of the other kicks were inside the 20.

Last game he had 3 of 5 kicks inside the 20, none returned, and his 2 he got to boom were both around 50 yards. (longest 52).

He really just has been winning the field position game for us when he has been involved. The stats on distance should even out this year, but 8 of 11 inside 20 is just insane.
