Abdur-Rahim's zeal for Cavs tied to 'Z'

Roger Brown
Plain Dealer Columnist
If the Cavs don't re-sign center Zydrunas Ilgauskas - and they shouldn't - it will definitely hurt their chances to land at least one attractive free agent this summer.

Aaron Goodwin, agent for Portland star Shareef Abdur-Rahim, says while his client is "definitely interested" in signing a free-agent deal with the Cavs, the forward's enthusiasm will cool considerably if Cleveland doesn't keep Ilgauskas, another potential free agent.

"[Abdur-Rahim's interest] changes if they lose [Ilgauskas]," Goodwin says of the Cavs. Last season, Abdur-Rahim averaged a solid 16.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game for Portland. While he's approaching his 10th NBA season, Abdur-Rahim is only 28 years old.

Only 28 years old. Young! In his prime!

Last time I checked, Zydrunas Ilgauskas is 30, but he's old, way past his prime, and inefficient.

Roger Brown is a silly man.

However, SAR is a decent post option for us if we do indeed lose Z. But what about the big man in the middle? Jerome James? Poop on that.

Re: Roger Brown = Evil Man

Since he has a quote, we can discuss what Roger Brown says in his column,,,

I would love to add Rahim next to Z, Rahim is a scorer and can rebound well. Plus, that just frees up Z even more.

It also allows us to move Gooden for a draft pick or another servicable player.

Depending on his demands, I would be interested in Rahim being here.

Re: Roger Brown = Evil Man

Sharif is one of my favorite fantasy players of all time. He's a stat sheet stuffer. Thank God the leagues I was in never counted defense.

Lebron, Z and Abdur-Rahim wouldn't be enough defense in our core.

can someone give a a good reason the cavs shouldnt resign Z? I mean obviously if he wants the max that would be a reason, but other than that the cavs should do everythign in their power to keep Z.

Re: Roger Brown = Evil Man

shareef said in a realgm article he wants to play beside Z

now i dont know how any of the money works but would this work?

trade drew for a draft pick sign shareef and and Z and a top tier SG it sounds like a lot so i dont know how this would work out.

Re: Roger Brown = Evil Man

i would much rather have rahim than gooden. rahim is soo much more consistant than drew and he can shoot from the outside.

Re: Roger Brown = Evil Man

It's the same catch 22 with rahim though. All offense, no defense. While his offense is a better grade than gooden's, shareef still doesn't solve our defensive problems in the front court.

And when you take into account agent goodwin says shareef would only sign w/ the cavs if Z is resigned that is for yet another year of sketchy defensive front court. We need someone who is better than Z defensively at the 4, and we still can't find that guy.

AAARGH

Re: Roger Brown = Evil Man

doesn't SHAREEF have back problems ?

i've seen him on the DL a couple times..............

Re: Roger Brown = Evil Man

I thought he had a shoulder problem? All I read in his bio is about shoulder surgery, and an elbow surgery. Don't see any back..

that's right-- i remember the elbow problem....i think i'm mixing his injury with theo ratliff's

Re: Roger Brown = Evil Man

Shareef would be an upgrade but with like many of the players we talk about, the price would have to be right. Shareef is going to have to take a big cut in pay in his next contract. I would think he'd be interested in coming to a team on the rise where he could play a major role. His average defense is a drawback but hopefully the Cavs make upgrades defensively at other positions and a new system improves the D even more.
Shareef would bring a much better and much more consistent offensive threat to the frontline. He does have a versatile offensive game. He would also make Gooden available in a trade to fill another area.

Re: Roger Brown = Evil Man

I think the only way we can sign Z and get Shareef is if Portland does a sign and trade for Drew and one of our swingmen. I wouldn't mind that neither. I would think that SAR's defense is right up there with Drew's. To add to that SAR's offense isn't comparable to Drew's. SAR can score inside out, Drew can't.

AND SAR will probably grab 9 boards a night playing next to Z.

Re: Roger Brown = Evil Man

i really do like SAR and he wants to play next to a elite center and Z is 1 of the elites. He knows the positives that would bring the team and him offensively and on the boards.

SAR and Z together isn't gonna be terrible on defense if we get the right pieces on the perimeter. That means all PG spots and SG spots and hopefully the SF's on our team improve.SAR and Z will be much improved in the backcourt and less foul prone.

now hopefully SAR will take much less then he gets now and Z gets much less now. Both has made over $14 mil this past yr. And SAR isn't really that old and neither is Z due to big men having a longer span in the nba. But i like this move if we can make it happen if the price is right!

Why the hell would we sign, and trade??? Shareef is a free agent, he's gone! :chuckles:

We can get him for only salary and then look to deal drew, and swingmen for more suitable players to fill out our roster.

I'm not seing why we would sign and trade

Re: Roger Brown = Evil Man

I meant Portland doing a sign and trade.
