AKRON, Ohio - The national champion Akron Zips mens soccer team had seven members selected in the 2011 Major League Soccer draft, five of them picked in the top eight picks.

Reigning Hermann Trophy winner Darlington Nagbe was selected second overall by Portland followed by Perry Kitchen third by D.C.United and Zarek Valentin fourth by Chivas USA.

Kofi Sarkodie and Michael Nanchoff will selected seventh and eighth by Houston and Vancouver respectively.

In the second round Chris Korb will be joining his teammate Kitchen with D.C. United. Anthony Ampaipitakwong was selected by San Jose.

All of the selected players lead the Zips to the schools first national championship in any sport last year.

UA has a celebration planned Tuesday at 5:30 at James A. Rhodes Arena.

A simple round of applause is due for arguably the most dominant college squad in history and certainly the most skilled group of players on one squad. These kinds of developments bode well for US soccer in the future. There is a great deal of talent in this country, and there is so much money out there for the sport, to a level that simply dwarfs football and basketball combined, that it is almost a foregone conclusion that eventually someone gets it right and the sport takes off here. In the meanwhile, the Cleveland area can appreciate having a major athletic achievement, even if it isn't the Cavs championship we hoped for the past few years.

Akron rocks, Kent State blows, Chardon is a fairy, etc etc.

Im here to make fun of your football team. 9 people in Ohio care about soccer.

I know what you're trying to do, it's just that when you factor in that the Zips soccer team's average attendance topped that of Kent State basketball this year (so yeah, people do care), and remember that Kent State's football team has 8 winning campaigns in 49 seasons (2 in the last 30 years), has never won the MAC, and last went to a bowl game in 1972, it all just kind of seems silly. :)

Oh yeah, in the last 10 years Akron has defeated Kent in 7 of 10 matchups.

Hey. You... you... you guys... don't play real good. I'll be awaiting your rebuttle.

In related news:

Soccer remains awful.

sock her sounds like domestic violence, but have been told it's a sport

They'll break that record in 2012

Next year is when Porter gets to prove just how good of a coach he is. He has lost nearly all of his best players in the last two years and while he will still have an extremely talented team he is going to need to find his leaders quick. Should be interesting to see what he comes up with.
