I just noticed his PER was down to 9.32.
I looked up ROY winners and the worst I could find was Jason Kidd at 15.1, but I didn't look back too far. Right now Wiggins is sitting between Anthony Bennett's 6.9 and Kwame Brown's 11.2 in the list of worst PERs by a #1 pick in the last 25 years.
Mike Miller won it with a PER of 13.2. I'm not really a huge fan of PER though. It has it's uses because it shows big time production on a per minute basis, but it isn't this be all stat that people make it out to be.
Like, comparing players (especially role players) based on PER is just ludicrous. You certainly don't build a basketball team by stacking guys with awesome PER's.
In the case of Andrew Wiggins I would be absolutely shocked if he becomes a superstar. I guess it is possible that he could make an all star team or two, but the dream of him being the next big thing should probably be over.
I do think he could be a very valuable player to a really good team though if he is put in the correct role. I think he will be a pretty good defender, but he needs to learn to take more efficient shots. He has an extremely low b-ball IQ as far as i'm concerned. He is very predictable with that spin move, and will use it in a lot of circumstances where it doesn't make sense and the possession ends up in a turnover.
He also is a really poor rebounder and not really much of a playmaker, you combine that with his lack of scoring prowess and it is a recipe for an extremely shitty PER.
@RchfldCavRaised compared Wiggins to a taller/longer Ben Mclemore. That is a pretty good comparison. Ben struggles with the exact same things, but has found a way to be a contributor by becoming a more efficient scorer/shooter. He also sports a pretty shit PER because he doesn't rebound or get a lot of assists and isn't a go to scorer.
I don't think Wiggins will be as good of a shooter as Ben, but he can certainly become a better defender, and a very passable shooter. He really needs to do better work on the glass though. His athleticism is not even close to being fully maximized.
