I like Marvel and know more than the average bear but would consider myself a casual fan. I have not seen all 22 Marvel movies leading up to this one.
I thought it fell short. I think Infinity Wars was just so damn good that this one didn’t stand a chance. This was character development and tying up loose ends. Nothing wrong w that but not nearly the action ratio that I was looking for. This is clearly a subjective review tainted by my expectations.
Thanos was a great fighter without the rings. Like too good but that was awesome. I don’t know who Captain Marvel is. Pretty much the best way to watch this would be to binge on all of the 22 movies, in order, then go see it.
I was disappoint from the get go with Thanos being decapitated. I wanted to see him use the glove and do all kinds of incredible things at some point.
I never saw Antman but I thought he was a really well played character. I thought he would be corny, and he was less corny than I thought.
Captain America was cool but to me he is still a bit corny.
Couldn’t Dr. Strange just disappear through a warp portal w the glove?
Spider Boy was cool. I thought they nailed it by not making him too powerful but still badass.
Stark is always fun. Love that ego. Also loved how emotionally broken he was once he got back to earth. And loved the first scene where bow & arrow guy’s family just dusted right in front of him. Very sad and well done.
Thor was a disappointment. Him being a big chunk was funny at times but I just wasn’t feeling it.
Hulk watching Angry Hulk just gratuitously angry was awesome. Well played.
The daughters turning on Thanos was obviously a huge deal. I guess that was OK. I wish there was more to it - for the length of the movie it seemed very rushed.
Like many others, I would have to see iron man take the gems again. In fact, how Thanos wasn’t able to close his fist I would have to see again.
So great movie but I can’t say it was my favorite Avengers movie. I think I am just more in it for the action and ringed Thanos is probably the best villain ever. I also liked it more when he was doing all of this for the good of the universe. Once he got vindictive, I thought it cheapened him a bit. I guess that’s more like the comics.
As long as the hard core Marvel fans are ecstatic about this, I’d have to say it was a masterpiece, just not what I thought it would be. The numbers don’t lie either - awesome viewership! Just not my personal favorite, and that’s OK.
The reason they can't fight Thanos while he has the glove is because Thanos is simply too powerful with the Infinity Gauntlet. This is why Thanos just watched as Iron Man snapped his fingers because he knew at that moment the battle was lost. That being said, the Russo Brothers decided not to make the way of defeating him include Adam Warlock (a character yet introduced in GotG) which they felt would have been overly complicated; but you'll likely see him and Gamora team up in future movies.
Other points:
1) Captain America is supposed to be corny. Even in the 1960s and 70s, guys like Hawkeye and Iron-Man called him an 'old fogey' and initially mocked him (to his face) for being out of touch. The had to learn to respect him, not because he was tougher than them, but because of his natural leadership qualities.
2) I agree about Thor, but in the comics when the Avengers first confront Thanos (in what was basically a suicide mission), the real Thor is basically 'gone' - and by his own volition. So, Thor being in this state of mental anguish and confusion is actually trying to capture the fact that Thor in the comics was going through a lot at the time, and the Thor of the Avengers was actually an impostor of sorts (a guy named Eric Masterson). That storyline was never used in the Thor movies (way too complicated) so they decided to go with this instead.. it works better. But FWIW, full-on Odinforce Thor will come back to the MCU likely far more powerful than before.
3) Dr. Strange could've disappeared the gauntlet for a time, but Ebony Maw is nearly as good of a sorcerer so he could've likely gotten it back. The only way Strange could've gotten away would've been to put the glove on; but he didn't. The question is why... but the answer is strongly implied by Infinity War and Endgame (and by the Ancient One) that the only way to defeat Thanos was to have Tony Stark commit suicide via the snap.
4) Thanos in Infinity War is more like Thanos from the comics, but I wouldn't say he's being vindictive. I think instead he's simply saying that his plan was doomed to fail because he would have an entire universe of potential enemies who would remember what was lost and would plot to end him. Once he rid the universe of the Infinity Stones he rid himself of the ability to defend his own plan; and that's exactly how the Avengers were able to undo is "work."
So Thanos realized the only way forward was to take the even greater responsibility of crafting an entirely new universe, completely from scratch, and acting effectively as God.
