With some extra time this weekend I came up with a plan for the Cavs to still improve even if they lose out on the big 4 FA SG's. It plans for a $49 million cap but would work with a $48 million cap too.
All players listed are unrestricted FA's. The salaries are fairly realistic enough to get all these players. The contracts factor in the allowed raises under the new CBA.

Step 1. Resign Z. A 4 year contract worth approx. $42 million that starts at $9 million in year 1 should get it done. This is more money than Z will get from any other playoff team who can only offer MLE level money and is better than playing for a terrible rebuilding Hawks team. If necessary add a fifth year making it worth a little over $54 million

Step 2. Sign Shareef Abdur-Rahim. A 5 year approx. $41 million deal could do it. Right now all he's getting is MLE offers and this contract starts at $7 million in year 1 which is $2 million above the MLE.

Step 3. Sign Bobby Simmons. 5 years at $36.5 million starting at $6.5 million in year 1. That might be more than the usually cheap Clippers wil be willing to pay.

Step 4. Sign Antonio Daniels. 3 years for $17.8 million starting at $5.5 million in year 1. It is overpaying but by offering over the MLE it would increase the odds of getting him.
The Cavs could also sign Sarunas Jasikevicius instead of Daniels. It should take $3 million in the 1st year of a contract to do that which would free up $2.5 million to still spend in free agency.

With a $21 million payroll and a $49 million cap, signing Z, Shareef, Simmons and Daniels to these amounts would still be $1 million under that cap number. That money could be used to slightly increase the 1st year of contracts to Z, Shareef or Simmons.

Simmons and Daniels would greatly improve the perimeter defense and both can shoot with range.
Shareef provides a consistent scoring threat who also possesses good shooting ability out to 20 feet.

It's not perfect and the Cavs wouldn't get that big time FA like Redd, Allen, Johnson or Hughes but I think would provide an improved team that is still pretty young and can grow together.

Good post Narl. We tend to get a little excited with all this Michael Redd talk even though it is probably more then likely that we miss out on him and the other 3 premier free agent guards. I'm sure the front office will have some plans in place for such an event in which Simmons and Daniels would play a key part. If we do sign Rahim, that means the end of Gooden which I hope we can package with Sasha for an athletic 4/5 guy who has a defensive presense.

C : Ilgauskas / Player traded for / Varejao / Martyuans And********
PF: Abdur Rahim / Varejao
SF : James / Newble / Jackson
SG : Simmons / Jackson / Newble / Daniels
PG : Daniels / Snow / Gilchrist

If we miss out on Redd, I think there's a high chance of signing Ray Allen. He's said he's more than interested in signing with the Cavs, and apparently a verbal announcement is expected this week. Apparently Michael Redd's decision is coming soon as well.

IMO Narl, that is the BEST case scenario if we miss out on the names mentioned in every thread. We could bring Drew and AV off the bench, Newbs can be a defensive stopper, Luke another scoring option off the bench, Snow a leader - would certainly be a championship calibre team that would be as fun to watch as any other combination of players. Matter of fact, thinking about it more, would probably be a more complete team than just re-signing Z and acquiring a Redd or Allen. Granted there'll probably be another name in there, but Shareef + Simmons is greater than a Redd or Daniels, plus we get a point to boot.

This would be a good problem, but what happens if both Redd and Allen say yes?

Well, we have the cap room to sign them both, but if both say yes, I think the Cavs have a great problem on their hands. But I think they choose Redd over Allen simply because of the age factor, and will thank Ray Allen very much for considering Cleveland.

Damn, if I was Danny Ferry and my top 2 choices said yes, I wouldn't know what to think.

Bobby Simmons has been in the leauge for a few years now, and really hasnt shown me much. Part of it may be because he's on the Clippers but I honestly don't think that he's a player on a championship team, and that's what we are trying to build.

I like Shareef he's a great player, and I actually would like to see him here. Remember all those trade talks a couple of years ago involving Shareef for Z? I'd like to see both of them on the Cavaliers :-D

well if that was the case if they both say yes, we could do this..

PG- LeBron/Snow
SG- Redd/Jackson/Newble
SF- Allen/Newble/Jackson
PF- Gooden/AV
C- ????

We already made it clear that Redd is are #1 choice so if they both say yes we take Redd.

I believe Ferry will choose Redd because,

1. He's younger
2. He's cheaper

If I'm not mistaken, Redd is a year younger...(I'll check after writing the response...). IMO, Allen is built to have a longer career, ala Reggie Miller. I have no scientific proof, and an injury can occur anytime, but all we need is for Allen to perform one extra year and things are equal. From my viewpoint on both players, I think Allen can sustain a higher level of play for a longer period of time. Many players fade and become role players later in their career - the chances of this happening to Redd are greater than they are for Allen. There's another way to look at it - just an opinion though - one year in age apart in their case shouldn't make much of a difference.

Now off to check their DOB...

seems I am mistaken...

Allen - July 20, 1975 - 9 yrs in league
Redd - August 24, 1979 - 5 yrs in league

My bad, sorry - could've sworn I saw someone state that before, and assumed it was correct.

Redd is only 25 while Allen is turning 30 in a few weeks...

Already amended message deadlock...hehe

Now, back to the original topic (I won't delete my original wrong message - I like to look the fool....) :chuckles:

I could definatly live with that being some what of our lineup. If worse comes to worse and we don't get one of the top SG's then I think that is still a well balance lineup that can make some damage in the playoffs next season.

I doubt that will EVER happen. Pipe dream none the less. Would be nice to have both, but I don't think it would make much sense.

LeBron shouldn't be starting PG, and Ray Allen is much better suited at the 2 guard. Ray would get drilled by the opposing SF's due to his size.
