Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
And only one of them is sitting at home this post-season because of shitty quarterback play.

Not fair to expect people to care more about Instagram drama and pretending Baker has been practicing leadership because he can win the press conference.

OBJ didn't really do anything wrong, and fans are going to project their pundit-driven narratives about "diva" culture and tired tropes about leadership, doing their little dance because it gets clicks to be cliche.
OBJ is in the playoffs because he made his situation so toxic the team let him go without getting anything back and he latched on to a team that was already a top team without him.

Even if one thinks Baker sucks, "OBJ didn't do anything wrong" is just a mindboggling take to me.

As you said OBJ is a "weapon" because he isnt his teams number 1 WR. Instead he is playing either 2 or 3 and defenses are much much more focused on Kupp than they are OBJ. Its an absolutely great setup for OBJ and he picked a good team to go to. But going forward its irrelevant as OBJ wasnt sticking around the browns for next year anyway. .

That said I think its ridiculous that anyone on here thinks OBJ wasnt asking to be released/traded, especially after he refused to play the first 2 games. He may not have gone public with it, like his father, but lets not pretend the first the team knew OBJ wanted to be gone was the week they released him

There is too much revisionist and false history here.

“Refusing to play”

“Wasn’t sticking around next year”

Browns fans have been just making it up as they go along at this point.

If you’ve convinced yourself that he was orchestrating absurd IG bullying by his friends and father to get off the team, I understand why you feel that way.

Personally, it seems more like Browns fans talking themselves into it out of sour grapes.

The teams regrettable decision to release him while getting zero value in return isn’t the “proof” you think it is that they were in the right.

They just cut bait and ran away, and they have to accept the reality that OBJ is currently proving them wrong, no matter what lengths fans go to so they can feel better about it.

In 6 games with the Browns this year he averaged 5.67 targets per game, 2.83 receptions per game, 6.8 yards per target, and 13.6 yards per catch. In 8 games with the Rams he's averaged 6 targets and 3.37 receptions per game, 6.4 yards per target, and 11.3 yards per catch. To my eye those numbers are remarkably similar. He basically gets one more target every 3 games, one more reception every other game and overall produces fewer yards but more touchdowns with the Rams. Either way he's neither a number one receiver nor a $10 million per year player anymore.

If, in your job, you continued to produce, but knew the company was going nowhere because the CEO was a doofus, what would you do? Sit back and continue to produce, or start looking for opportunities at other companies that had more promise?
Did he though? I saw drops in key spots and giving up on routes more than I'd expect from a WR1.

I haven't convinced myself of anything, it was clear to anyone paying attention. If he wasn't doing this, why would the team send him home? It's common sense.

He cherry-picked a spot where he could be a #2/3 guy and have a few good games. Good for him. I'm happy we moved on.

Just pure projection, “clear to anyone paying attention” is the just another way to disingenuously ask “do you even watch football.”

There were clear problems on the team in the weeks leading up to this, and you don’t get released for your dad saying mean things on Instagram.

So aside from projecting OBJ orchestrated it, aside from ignoring Hunt’s father did something similar, disingenuously ignoring Emily Mayfield shading his teammates and fans (then apologizing)…

I’m just not going to pretend like OBJ wasn’t right, just like he was when he shaded Gettleman and the Giants trash organization and play. And it’s really just that simple…

The entire WR room is likely to get cleaned out short of Schwartz and DPJ, the play calling situation is a mess. Baker has publicly called out the coaches for “not putting them in position” on multiple occasions.

Who is the cancer here? Because all that shit happened after OBJ left.

Or was he orchestrating that too?

You're right, your dad posting some bullshit on Instagram isn't going to get you sent home and released and nothing happened when Hunt's dad did it (although, to Hunt's credit, he shot it down and backed Baker when asked about it).

So let's consider this...how bad must OBJ's behavior have been behind the scenes for the team to decide it was better to send him home and let him go for nothing? They didn't cut Hunt, as you said. So why did they decide their football team was better without OBJ there?

(Note: The WR group is getting cleared out because most of the group is overpaid and/or underperforming. Even if they go get Russ Wilson this offseason some significant upgrades need to happen.)

Sorry to interject, but if the problems between OBJ and Baker were making it impossible for them to co-exist and one of them had to go, it's a whole lot easier for the team to let OBJ go than Baker for a myriad of reasons, irrespective of whatever behavior either player displayed on or off the field/someone being more or less toxic.

OBJ literally asked for a trade BEFORE the season. If you don’t think it’s fishy that his dad and associates decided to post things all at once then I don’t know what to tell you. Since I have to say it Emily Mayfield sucks too.

For sure, but it also had to be pretty significant for them to just send him home and not even have him around the team.

So there are numerous news articles that OBJ blindedsided the browns when he didn't play week 1. OBJ held himself out those 2 weeks. Browns thought he was good to go.

And the browns were not going to pick up his 16 million/year option unless he put up insane numbers.

This isn't made up stuff.

ETA: yes maybe OBJ would have renegotiated.

Well I can see this thread has turned into a shit show again. We get it Baker sucked this year. OBJ isn’t the same player he was in NY both things are true. OBJ isn’t elite anymore he’s averaging a whole 38 yards receiving for the rams while playing next to the the best WR in the NFL and a very friendly system.
