Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
What in the world are you talking about?

I said in the game thread that we couldn’t afford to fall behind early in this game. Without OBJ it’s hard to see how this offense was going to get back into the game if we had to throw the ball. Aside from Austin Hooper this is our passing offense for the rest of the season. I don’t see how it’s going to look much better.

Getting Higgins more targets would help. Along with getting Hooper back, as you said. DPJ barely got any looks either.

Well, a few things:

1) Probably won't be playing in 40 MPH winds most of the season.

2) As you have said, getting Hooper back.

3) Probably won't be game planning around bad weather

4) Hopefully the Browns get more than 6 possessions in the game

5) How is it Baker's fault that he had one dropped touchdowns and several drops on big gains? How does that make him limited?

I’m confused why we didn’t throw the ball more. yes it was windy but there were plays to be made in the passing game today. At some point you have to cut t Los and trust your guy to make some throws. Carr took a couple of shots into the wind. We didn’t take any.

I refrained from saying much about Baker this week as I liked how he responded and was interested to see what he'd do against a better team.

Looking back on the stats and thinking about the first half of the season, something stood out to me:

Baker vs teams over .500 (1-3):
4 TD
5 INT
33.9 AVG QBR
3 QBR under 50

Baker vs teams under .500 (4-0):
11 TD
2 INT
82.25 AVG QBR
3 70+ QBR
2 90+ QBR

This is honestly my biggest concern about Baker, and something similar happened during his rookie year. If he's going get an extension, at one point he's got to show up against a good team. He's just not going to be a guy you can consistently win with if he can only be counted on against bad teams. Otherwise, we'll just get bounced in the first round of the playoffs every year unless the defense wins the game for us.

I will be interested to see how this looks at the end of the year. The Browns have at least three games left vs teams over .500. If Philly wins their next two games they'll also be .500. If we finish the year 10-6, but the same performances continue and we went 1-5 vs teams over .500, are you thrilled about paying that QB?

I’m not blaming the drops on him. I’m saying he is not built to overcome mistakes and play from behind. I would’ve gave him more opportunities to throw today. There wa a lot of rollouts that I felt were too safe. he should’ve taken some shots. A big passing play would’ve shifted the momentum of the game. It’s hard to get momentum plays in the passing game playing conservative. Baker is not built to friend it out from behind like that. You have to let him sling it. We need to live and die by his arm at some point and stop being heavily dependent on a running scheme to open things up.

Give him the ball and let him rip it. If he fails then so be it by why handcuff him like this? Do the coaches not trust him?

Everything in your post, other than the bolded, is a coaching issue.

Baker played literally all of the last game from behind. Baker has about 10 GWD in his career. And, again, you think it would have been wise to game plan as if there was no weather?

How'd that work out for the Browns in 2007? You have to game plan around the weather, especially in that shit hole of a stadium. We don't have a dome so sometimes you have to play a game like this one, and it just sucks. Baker did everything a good QB could do to win that game today. Sometimes, you just have to write it off and move on.

To make any grandiose statements after THIS game? ludicrous, delirium, flat out foolish. He was dead last with my problems for the Browns this game.

I used this stat early in the week- the second the weather was shit, this week became a throw away from a comparison standpoint.

I don’t know what anything right now has to do with 2007.

If all of those points were a coaching issue then how much confidence does the coach have in the QB?

I don’t know if you watch many games, but the conservative play-calling in inclement weather is standard of any coach in the NFL. 40mph winds is actually pretty insane and doesn’t happen often.

Carr has been slinging it all year and even Gruden scaled back the passing even though they had nearly twice as many plays as the Browns.

I agree that Stefanski should have aired the ball out more but I don’t think it’s an indictment of his confidence in Baker.

Sorry, I can't place much on Baker in this game. I saw him miss two throws.

On the first pass Landry dropped, there was an open player he missed first. Honestly hard to blame him since it was on Landry to bring the ball in.

Second was a pass behind Landry on the final drive, right after the miracle one-hand grab he made.

Baker didn't take a single sack, moving around in the pocket for more time and scrambling well for positive yards when needed. He was also personally responsible for two fourth and one conversions.

Most importantly, he was not responsible for any turnovers. If anything would turn me on Mayfield long-term for the Browns, it's his turnover ratio. Today, he was conservative. That's okay in this weather.

He completely outplayed Derek Carr, but the supporting cast on offense didn't keep up.

I don’t know. I just feel like coming off that game last week and being back at home we should’ve leaned on Baker a little more. I’m not saying I don’t trust the coaches Orr that I don’t believe in the scheme. I love the coach and the scheme. I just think you gotta let Baker go sometimes. he’s a rhythm QB and an energy guy. You gotta let him have some shots at some big plays.

All week people talked about Baker having his confidence back. Baker even mentioned that he has his confidence back but it really didn’t look like the coaches wanted any part of that. Weather be damned.
