Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Let's get back to the real topic, folks: how the Browns ended up with the 3rd best QB in his draft class and thank Zeus we didn't take either of the two guys the fans wanted.

i think trying to judge these QB's after 2.75 seasons is a bit disingenuous (well expect for the obvious 1-Rosen who is all but a complete bust). But if you want to play this game.

Right now I see almost no argument for any of them to fall outside of the following Jackson, Baker, Allen, Darnold, and finally Rosen. Jackson won and MVP, Baker is by far the best passer, Allen while pretty mediocre will be in the playoffs for 2 out of 3 years. Darnold actually started a couple of seasons. Rosen sucks dick and is basically out of the league.

Going forward. I expect Jackson to fall off a damn cliff (because he is a run first QB, and without exception all run first QBs have fallen off a cliff). We are already seeing it, but i would imagine by 2025 (At the latest) the Ravens are looking for another starting QB. That leaves Baker and Allen. If Baker can actually put it together (Which is slowly happening, but who knows) he becomes a top 5-12 range QB for 10 years. Allen has the potential to fall into the same category but who knows. The rest... well who cares.

edit: i should have added. While i think the ravens are probably looking for a new QB by 2025, Jackson still has plenty of time to put himself WAY in front of the rest of the class. He wins a super bowl and its going to take a hell of a career by either Baker or Allen to match that. Even if their careers end up lasting twice as long

I really believe Baker ends up the best. I said during the year last year I don't think Lamar is as good as people think, and after a very fast start, Allen has fallen fast back down to earth.

I don't think Baker ends up elite though, but I do think he will be a good qb, kind of at the level of Matt Ryan or Stafford. But as a passer, Baker clearly has more tools than anyone in the class and shows better play making decisions already as the season goes on, so in 2-3 years I think he settles in as a top 10 QB.

The concern I have with Baker is that even though he's only a 3rd year guy on his 3rd or 4th offensive system, he's not a young kid. He's 25. It's hard to project a lot of upside at this point. It could happen, but I think it is hard to expect to see it if we don't see it soon. I think we are finally at the make or break point for Baker. I feel that the next two games are going to tell a lot about which direction his career is going to go.

This is qb in football, not basketball. Growth is both physical, but also mental. Mental growth is with exposure. He isn't a fully baked product yet. He might not get faster, stronger better arm, but he doesn't need a better arm, many, many qb's, in fact almost all the greats, grew the most from 24-28 or so. Plenty of time left for Baker to grow.

Honestly, the only time I can remember a QB growing and developing physically in a positive way after he entered the pros was Drew Brees.

Baker already has the arm strength that Brees developed in the NFL, so no worries there. It's all mental development at this point.

Brees had the arm strength too, if there is a QB I knew it his him. He developed because of a change in system, but he was pretty good in SD, better than I thought, or told him to his face, lol, but it was the move to NOLA that made him HOF worthy....but you already new that.

At the combine he had decent arm strength already, he played in a college system under Tiller that was more about accuracy, crossing routes, and short to intermediate passes, exactly like Sean Peyton.
