Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Mariota, Trubisky, Winston, Heineke, Jimmy G are all way fucking worse players. It doesn’t take a brainiac to see that.

Carr is even debatable as fuck when Mayfield is healthy.

Best bet is to bring in a rookie like Sam Howell and tell Baker listen, you gotta beat this guy out now for your contract. Push him with competition.

Jimmy G is not a way worse player than Baker.

It's also not debatable with Derek Carr. Derek Carr is clearly better than Baker Mayfield.

Carr is basically Mayfield if he stayed in that 10 game hot streak. I want that version of Mayfield or Carr. Maybe someone can make the case for Ryan or someone else, but I haven't heard any good arguments. Mariota, Trubisky, or Jimmy G are backups or starters on rebuilding teams. Most damning argument against Winston would be the turnovers and his lack of success under Arians.

That level of desperation is unnecessary when Mayfield can be a perfectly fine bridge QB or possibly turn shit around. Think as fans we are just desperate as fuck for Mayfield to play up to his potential or to get at least average QB play from somewhere.

My only Mariotta arguement is his athleticism.

I don’t want him, but that’s it. You’d expect him to not turn it over and only make easy throws.

But he’d also probably get hurt.!

Project your feelings on people much?!

Nick Foles won a superbowl. I'd take that all day.

Again, who the fuck are you going to replace Baker with? I'm waiting!

Run it back, have a better "plan B" than Keenum, and see what happens. Baker has proven to be a good QB when healthy. He isn't now. Bailing on him after one injured season is stupid.
See, I think the narrative needs to change to "maybe he wasn't ever that good in the first place" rather than giving him the benefit of the doubt that this is one bad injured stretch..

Eliminating this year, here is where Baker ranks in QB stats for 2018-2020 (his three "healthy" seasons)

Overall (2018-2020)
EPA+CPOE: 26th
EPA: 24th
Success rate: 31st
CPOE: 29th (he was about even in completion percentage vs. completion percentage over expected)
Air yards: 5th

On 3rd and 4th Downs (2018-2020)
EPA+CPOE: 27th
EPA: 22nd
Success rate: 22nd
CPOE: 30th
Air yards: 10th

In 4th Quarter (2018-2020)
EPA+CPOE: 30th
EPA: 32nd
Success rate: 30th
CPOE: 31st
Air yards: 13th

Overall pt 2 (2018-2020)
Passer Rating: 89.46
QBR: 59.26
AV (approximate value): 35 AV

For context, the following QBR and Passer Rating from 2018-2020:

Brady: 95.6 RATING, 65.53 QBR, 41 AV
Dalton: 85 RATING, 51.76 QBR, 21 AV
Lamar: 99 RATING, 66.43 QBR, 51 AV
Cousins: 104 RATING, 61 QBR, 40 AV
Wentz: 89.36 RATING, 58.1 QBR, 26 AV
Carr: 98.7 RATING, 60.5 QBR, 36 AV
Goff: 92.53 RATING, 57.56 QBR, 40 AV
Big Ben: 95.3 RATING, 64.85 QBR, 24 AV* (only two years of data)
Russ: 107.4 RATING, 69.4 QBR, 46 AV

Looking at these, it's hard not to see the similarities in some but his pocket of QBs seems to be within the Goff/Wentz on the bottom end and Carr/Cousins on the top end which is right around where I think most people have him at...

The question exists: Is he really as good as some people think he is?

You talk about CONTEXT but it should be noted that in your comparison list of QBs only Lamar was a fellow rookie in that span. Comparing Baker to a prime years veteran is cherrypicking.

He did such a good job of not fucking it up they gave him the Super Bowl MVP Award!

The MVP often goes to a QB at the expense of the player who really deserves it. Just ask Damien Williams. Pat Mahomes is still renting that Super Bowl MVP but we all know who really deserved it.

The Eagles defense gave up 613 yards and 33 points in that Super Bowl.

Foles had an excellent game including the GW touchdown pass with less than 3 minutes left. I'm not sure what you're arguing.

I thought he retired. It be useful to have an athlete as a third string if they want to hold on to a third QB or maybe hide one on the practice squad.

Part of the reason I'm partial to Tribusky besides him being from Mentor, is his running ability. Might as well get some use out of the backup and Stefanksi could probably have some packages for a guy like that.

Heineke would EAT under Stefanski and this running game.

Said what I said.

My friend is a WFT team fan. Hates his guts.

Everytime I watch him I wish Baker would just make decisions like him. He makes quick reads and it bails out his noodle.

Disregard the athletic abilities. Just the decision making.

Heineke really isn’t that good lol. Limited sample size, give it time.
