Cavs likely to hunt for bargains

Associated Press
The Cavaliers would love to add Celtics forward James Posey to the mix this off-season.
The phone calls started at midnight as the Cavaliers jumped into NBA free agency, which begins today.
But just because they're talking doesn't mean anything will happen when the signing period opens July 9. In fact, given the Cavs are almost $25 million over the salary cap of $55.63 million, it's highly unlikely they'll make a big splash in the free-agent pool -- no matter how much they like players like Boston Celtics forward James Posey of Twinsburg and Golden State guard Baron Davis.

General Manager Danny Ferry repeatedly has said how much he likes his team and how much he values continuity.

That being said, if he makes any substantial changes, they likely will come through trades or sign-and-trades, not big free-agent signings. The Cavs still could use an additional scorer and some help on the perimeter.

The Cavs' most pressing problems are re-signing restricted free-agent guards Daniel Gibson and Delonte West. Because they're restricted, the Cavs can match any offer and retain their services, which usually deters other teams from making serious pushes. NBA teams can go over the salary cap to keep their own free agents.

The Cavs declined to make a qualifying offer to forward Dwayne Jones, making him an unrestricted free agent. They do retain his "Larry Bird rights," however, which means they could go over the salary cap to sign him should they decide to do so at a later date.

Their other unrestricted free agent is Devin Brown, who went from a starter to bench-sitter late in the season and throughout the playoffs. It is unclear whether he fits in their plans.

Going green:

LeBron James has teamed up with Nickelodeon's The Big Green Help pro-social campaign and is featured in a new online minigame - "LeBron James: Worldwide Big Green Bike-a-Thon."

James also recorded a public-service announcement that will help kids focus on ways to save energy and take part in earth-friendly activities.

"We all need to be aware of how to take care of the environment," James said in a news release issued by Nickelodeon. "I'm glad that I can show kids what they can do to help."

Playing politics:

James and girlfriend Savannah Brinson recently were part of a group that had dinner in New York with Michelle Obama, wife of Sen. Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

"It was an unbelievable experience," James told the Associated Press. "It was mind-boggling."

But James said he wasn't planning to do any campaigning.

"I'm not so far into it," he told the AP. "I don't feel I need to be hands-on into it. You want to keep athletics and politics separate. I don't want to start getting up on panels or talking about Barack or [Republican Sen. John] McCain. I'm aware of what's going on not just with the presidential election. You want to be aware of gas prices and other things. Being a father and being responsible for my kids, I want to know what's going on in our world.
