Reports from the scene seem to indicate that the accident was serious. According to an eyewitness, Roethlisberger went over his handle bars and hit his head on the windshield of a car. He was not wearing a helmet. The eyewitness reports that Roethlisberger tried to get up, but was bleeding from the head.

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was involved in a motorcycle accident in Pittsburgh on Monday morning.

"He was alert and conscious," said Ernie Roman, shift commander for the Allegheny County emergency service.

Witnesses told authorities that the player's motorcycle collided with a car near a downtown intersection and that Roethlisberger's head hit the windshield and was bleeding. Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet when riding.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that Roethlisberger wasn't wearing a helmet. In previous interviews, Roethlisberger has said that he does not like wearing a helmet while wearing a motorcycle.

ESPN.com's John Clayton reports that early indications are the injuries are not life-threatening.

One of his agents, Ryan Tollner, is in route to Pittsburgh for what was supposed to be a pre-planned trip and will arrive later Monday.

One witness told KDKA television that Roethlisberger was conscious but appeared disoriented before he was taken from the scene to Mercy Hospital.

A Steelers spokesman is at the hospital and confirmed Roethlisberger is being treated there, but wouldn't provide additional details.

John Clayton said that it was not life threatening....... But still holy crap I guess Big Ben had been talking to Kellen Winslow a little to much...

Well teams can't say shit about the Browns anymore. We've had guys arrested (Rube) as have the Steelers (Holmes), Accidents (Porter got shot)(Ben wrecked a bike)(Winslow wrecked a bike)Ravens should be called the Jailbirds..

Pittsburgh media outlets reported that Roethlisberger was in surgery for a broken jaw. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, citing a police source, reported Roethlisberger also broke his left sinus cavity, suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head, lost teeth and has knee injuries from hitting the pavement. A plastic surgeon has been called in, the source said.

Tasteless Raven fan..although everyone did laugh at us when Kellen wrecked his..

Not to be an ass, but you never wanna wish ill will towards anybody, but if he had wore a helmet, he would have walked away from this.

Karma is a ***** and its sad to say, but he deserved it. Lesson learned.

Let's hope this affects his game somehow.

The broken jaw is a two month or so injury, so he won't miss any games due to that most likely, the knees are where it starts.. The Steelers press release was funny. The news is encouraging his hands and arms are ok. Wow don't focus on the human being only the football player. Douchebags..
