He went undrafted for a reason. Hold your horses.
In previous years Mathias, Colson, and Preston would have been drafted. They all would have been second rounders, though Preston might have been a late first in a less deep draft.
Since the NBA Draft is so short, getting drafted has to be measured against your class. Time will tell, but going into the Draft the consensus was that this was one of the deepest drafts in a very long time.
In regards to Colson, the thread title is misleading because the video hits on who he compares to: PJ Tucker. That's a solid comparison.
And that means Colson is not going to come in and start at PF like Green did. Draymond is a perennial All Star. Colson is not going to be that. Could he be PJ Tucker, a guy who can play hard as a rotation guy, play guys tough, and knock down some shots? Sure. But Tucker has never been a scorer and never averaged double digits.
T-Ball also concluded that Mathias could be a slightly better version of Harris - and I agree.
It's worth remembering that Korver was picked at 51. He may have gone undrafted in a class as deep as 2018 - and he was only 9 picks away from that happening. There's no massive drop off from 50 to 70, so undrafted doesn't necessarily mean much.
47% of all active NBA players were not drafted in the first round. Most of them are not stars, many are solid rotation players. Jeremy Lin, Udonis Haslem, Ben Wallace, Bruce Bowen, Raja Bell, Mike James, and many others were undrafted in the past. Undrafted players can make an impact. Are the odds in favor of it? No. But can it happen? Yep.
The best way to see one of them deliver is to have a large group play for you. That's what the Cavs are doing. Will Colson, Preston, and Mathias all pan out? Highly unlikely. Could one of them pan out over time? That's possible. Preston does have the potential to be special, but he will also require the most work. I think Mathias has a decent chance at being a solid rotation player. Colson is the one I think that is least likely to be a worthwhile NBA player.
