Two Missing Boys Found Alive in Mo. Home

Jan 12, 8:39 PM (ET)
By CHRISTOPHER LEONARD

BEAUFORT, Mo. (AP) - A 13-year-old boy who vanished from the gravel road near his home five days ago was found alive about 60 miles away in a suburban St. Louis home, along with a 15-year-old boy missing since 2002, authorities said Friday.

The boys were found in a Kirkwood home belonging to Michael Devlin, 41, who has been charged with one count of first-degree kidnapping, Sheriff Gary Toelke said.

The sheriff said both boys appeared unharmed. William Ownby, who goes by Ben, appeared somewhat dazed as he walked inside the sheriff's department, where he was reunited with his family Friday night.

The straight-A student and Boy Scout was last seen after he stepped off his school bus and ran toward his home down a gravel road on Monday.

A friend who left the bus with the boy told authorities that after the two parted, he saw a small white pickup with a camper shell speeding away from where Ben had been walking.

Searchers on foot, horseback and all-terrain vehicles looked for Ben in the hilly area about 60 miles southwest of St. Louis.

Toelke said the break in the case came Thursday night. Kirkwood city police officers were serving a warrant on an apartment complex when they noticed a white truck matching the description of a vehicle authorities had been searching for in the Ownby investigation.

Kirkwood officers contacted the Franklin County Sheriff's Department and determined where the owner of the truck was and then searched Devlin's house.

Toelke said authorities were surprised to find another boy who identified himself as Shawn Hornbeck.

Hornbeck disappeared from his home in rural Washington County in October 2002, when he was 11. He went for a bike ride and never returned.

Hornbeck's parents, Pam and Craig Akers, were coming to meet their son in Union, the Franklin County seat, Toelke said.

His parents have devoted themselves to bringing missing people home since Hornbeck vanished over four years ago from his hometown 65 miles southwest of St. Louis.

His parents, dozens of volunteers and sniffer dogs searched for weeks. The couple set up a Web site and listened to anyone who offered a tip.

Craig Akers, Shawn's stepfather, quit his job as a software designer to devote his time to a foundation bearing his son's name. They depleted their savings, borrowed against their retirement and talked to psychics. The financial strain forced both of them back to work.

A retired police officer volunteered to work on the case until Shawn was found.

Even though so much time had passed, Pam Akers said her son is frozen in her memory as an 11-year-old boy.

"It's been four years," she said on the anniversary of his disappearance last fall. "But for me, it's just been one long continuous day."

Toelke said authorities were still investigating the motive behind the abductions. Franklin County Prosecutor Robert Parks said more charges are likely to be filed.

"There are a lot of things we don't know right now," Toelke said

Wow I can't imagine how those parents must feel right now. That guy needs to go to prison for life, what a piece of ****.

It's creepy guys like this that make the world such a scary place...he's going to be killed Jeffrey Dahmer style in prison..

I can't imagine what this freak has put their parents through. This POS better get life.

Forget life. Give him "The Saddam"!

Did he abuse the boys or just take them? Kinda hard for me to believe that the first one willing stayed with him without escaping. They said on the news that he was seen running around outside playing ball. If he was 11 thats old enough to know that guy isn't any kin to you and try to escape.

Just guessing here, but brainwashing? I have no other explanation. The kid was taken at age 11, and is now 15, after all.

At 11? You would figure that by that time he would know he this man isn't my father or something.

You can brainwash a person at any age. Hypnosis, drugs, the works.

Wow, what an incredible story, there was one like this that happened in Aussie...but sometimes stuff like this makes you wonder how many other people who are supposidly "missing" are really just cooped up in some sicko's house. great story though, hopefully both kids can get the counseling they need to get back to stable mind set.

I wonder what makes these sick people tick?

This is strikingly similar to the Steven Stayner story which later got made into a movie "I know my name is Steven". The short version of that story, if memory serves, was that he got abducted and was told that his parents had moved and no longer wanted him as a child. After weeks and months of reinforcement he bought into it. Ken Parnell gave him gifts and earned his confidence...then started molesting him. Over the next 7 years Parnell admitted to sexually assaulting him over 3,000 times. Eventually Parnell wanted a little boy again and abducted a second child named Timmy White. Two weeks later Steven realized that Parnell was molesting Timmy too and took him to a police station and Parnell was arrested....Steven and Timmy were reunited with there families.
Steven Stayner had an awful time reuniting with his family and his older brother Cary was never the same, I think Cary eventually turned into a serial killer murdering 4 people. Steven got married had two kids, and died at a young age in a motorcycle accident.

I hope Shawn Hornbeck gets tons of therapy. I saw the press conference it was incredibly moving. The physical change is amazing. When he was abducted he was a little clean cut kid with a crewcut....so innocent. Now he has a peirced lip, pierced ears, long hair, and probably a foot taller. Everyone is keeping all the details quiet at this point about what happened. Shawn's father says they want to give him a lot of time before asking him what's happened. Shawn seemed very excited to be reunited with his parents and kept on kissing and hugging his mother.
Just an incredoble story. Two thoughts keep running through my head. First, how many other kids are out there alive with abducters while their parents sit at home devestated. Second, I think I want to put a GPS chip in my child...don't know what I'd do if he didn't come home one day.

With all the shitty stories you here about on the news, it's nice to hear one with a positive ending. Thank God.

Yep. I thought he was gonna turn up dead like so many others.

Ya, I want to put a GPS chip system on my kid too. Put the chip in his forearm or something. Like closer to his elbow because not much goes on up there in that department of the the forearm. I'm gonna ask for it...Is it possible right now?

Law, its possible for dogs and other animals i think, its injected as a shot, but i dont know how i would feel about that on humans, i think that sex offenders should have something similar, as opposed to the ankle braclet.
