So my girlfriend left her laptop under a blanket on the ground and I stepped on it and really messed up the screen. So I'm stuck replacing it.

Any of you tech savvy people have any tips on where I should get it done and about how much it will run me? This fucking sucks.

Flee the state and find a new girlfriend. It is the only way

It depends on the model but I've changed out several and it's no big deal. There's a lot of places online that sell them. If you don't feel comfortable doing it, I would order the part and just hit up a local shop.

My guess is a screen is like 100ish depending on size, etc

Yeah I think that's what I'll end up doing. I called a tech shop and he said it could be anywhere from $150-$250 but I think that's if they provide the new screen and everything.

What kind of laptop? What are the specs? How old is it?

If it's a POS, you're better off just buying a new low-end laptop and sell hers for parts.

You can probably teach yourself to do the job, there are plenty of youtube videos. Might want to check ebay for a new screen too.

It's about a year old and it's a Toshiba Satellite if I remember correctly. She seemed pretty hesitant when I offered to buy the screen and do it myself, I think she worries I'll fuck it up even more :chuckles:

Luckily I just got my tax returns so it's not coming directly out of my pocket. I wanted to use my $100 best but gift card that I've had for ages, but they don't have the right parts according to the guy on the phone. Gift cards are the worst fucking gifts. I would've much rather just had $100 cash.

yeah, what is the model #.

Also agree that if it's a POS <$500 machine I would just take out the HDD and throw it in a enclosure and recycle the machine.

(assuming you have the resources)

seconding this

Really easy to replace, it will be costly though. I'd take the advice of the others around here and maybe think about getting a higher end laptop and scrapping the parts from the old one. If you choose to go that route, I'd say look into Lenovo or HP. Never have had hardware problems with either of them.

HP used to purposefully give their proprietary MOBOs a short life span so that only they could repair them for crazy rates because they left the mobo out of the warranty. fuck them.

I've been using a Lenovo U510 for the past year, but before that I had one of the HP Envy models that lasted about three years before I decided it was time for a new one. I haven't heard that story about HP though. Interesting. I recall Dell being accused of something very similar a couple years ago. Sad that these companies do this. It's a lot cheaper to just build your own computer (not laptop but yeah) these days and you'll probably get a lot more out of it too.

Yeah companies can be quite dirty. After having two expensive laptops, im never going high price again unless its for a mac..it just isnt worth it otherwise. They are prone to over heating, theft, accidental breaking, you cant really upgrade them, batteries can shit the bed, they get dirty/clogged with dust etc. just go cheap and buy a new one every other year if you really want to.

you can probably get some money for it with a broken screen and no HDD by selling it on eBay. Someone will buy it and fix it up.

CornerThree is right, the screen should run you around ~$100-150. If you do it yourself, it'll probably take about a solid hour. If you pay someone to do it, you'll probably come out of $50-80 for that hour of labor. Just be sure to make them charge you by the hour, and be there when they do it.

You can also watch videos how to do this online.

When I was hurting in 2008, I used to do these types of repairs all the time. Several per week.
