Carmona and the Bullpen

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He's got such a great name too. Its a shame.

He'll figger it out soon enough...as far as I'm concerned he should close every game...if he wins cool good experience for later on..if not..better draft picks.

I was watching Baseball Tonight last night and they talked about Carmona and his struggles... Basically what they said:

John Kruk:" Carmona has all the stuff to be a very good closer in this league. All he really needs to do, is figure it out mentally. Once he does that, the Indians will be set at closer for awhile. You will now have a guy at the back of your bullpen who has gone through all the struggles and now knows how to handle the tough situations."

Steve Phillips: "This guy has dynamic stuff, but needs some more confidence in his game. IMHO, what the Indians should do is put him in a role where he can build his confidence back up. Let him go in agaisnt some cupcake teams and get some wins. Then go from there and let him close again."

They then showed a graphic, basically like this:

Mariano Rivera: Blew 3 out of first 6 saves; first year as full time close
Trevor Hoffman: Blew 2 saves out of 4 chances
Billy Wagner: Blew 2 out of 5 saves at his first shot at closing

Basically what they said was they can't give up on him. Just because he's had his struggles, you need to work him through it. Teams like the Yankees could of gave up on Rivera, and would of never seen his full potential.

I thought some of you would enjoy this..

The thing that made me mad is, carmona got smoked 2 of the 4 games against the redsox. so then Eric has him close the very next series against the best team in the game. Not a very good job by the manager.

The season is over it's time to take risks to build for next year Carmona with the right pitching coach could be a legit closer.. so all in all fire Carl Willis...

Rivera spent at least a full season as a set up guy to a really good closer before he closed games himself and he still struggled at first. Carmona is being rushed into a role he is obviously not ready for. Didn't he just come up from the minors a few months ago? Jason Davis is the guy we need to find out about. He has the stuff and experience, now he needs to show if he can close or not. But Wedge does not seem to like him. Soon he will be cut and join Brandon Phillips in Cincinatti where he will become an all star closer. Carmona should set up and JD should close.

I agree, for now I would have Fausto set up and Davis close. Eventually I want Fausto to be our closer but he needs to build his confidence now. But I can't totally fault Wedge for sticking him in there. This is a lost season and they are trying to get experience for some of the young guys. I don't think we are as far away as it looks right now. We just need some depth in the bullpen.

BTW, did anyone happen to catch the programming on STO last night? They showed the 95 and 97 Tribe seasons in review. I forgot how nice it was to have guys like Assenmacher, Jackson, and Mesa (pre-World Series meltdown) in our pen. Good memories.

Indians still need to win my friend. season is not over yet, I'm not happy with 47 wins.

Agreed..

But a guy to keep your eye on is Fernando Cabrera.. The guy was stellar last year in his appearances.. He had a 1.47 ERA and his WHIP was pretty good at around 0.90.. He also held the batters to a 212 batting average.. I think given the chance to close, you could see him take the job..

The great job about this situation, is that we have 3 guys capable of closing; Jason Davis, Fernando Cabrera, and Fausto Carmona... We just need to see who can do their best and hold down the job..

If in fact Cabrera or Davis win the closers role, expect to see Carmona back in the rotation..

A core of CC, Carmona, Lee, Sowers in the pitching staff is very nice to me.. Ideally, I'd try to get a #1 RHP, that can be the ace and take pressure off of CC..
