Chat with Cavaliers Head Coach Mike Brown

Cleveland Cavaliers' majority owner Dan Gilbert announced on June 3rd, 2005 that Mike Brown has been named as the team's new head coach. Brown, 35, has served in various roles in the NBA for the past 13 seasons. Most recently, he served as the associate head coach of the Indiana Pacers under Head Coach Rick Carlisle for the past two seasons.

dis (Charlotte): Coach Brown, congrats for your first head coaching position in the NBA. I send you best wishes and I wanted to ask what is the first thing you're going to do in Cleveland?

Mike Brown: Thank you. The first order of business is to get in touch with the players which I have already done. Then, I plan to get my office organized, get my staff together, and then get involved with the Draft and the free agency period.

Brian Bills (Columbus, OH): Mike, What type of offense do you plan on using and how does LeBron figure into it? What style of basketball players would you like to build around LeBron?

Mike Brown: Offensively I am a big fan of the pick and roll game, and with LeBron on the floor, we need to have guys around him that can knock down shots because there are going to plenty of opportunity.

Anthony (Gahanna): Hey, if we get into the draft, who are some of the guys you would really like to have on your bench this year?

Mike Brown: A lot of that depends what position we'd get in the draft if we got in. I have not seen a lot of players yet since I came on board this late. There were a lot of intriquing players in Chicago at the draft camp.

Matt (West Palm Beach, FL): Mike, what's the single biggest thing that you look for in a player? Is is talent, work ethic, love for the game, intelligence?

Mike Brown: With this team, the most important thing is character. Beyond that, you have to definitely take into consideration the talent level or skill set that paticular player will bring to the team.

Khaled (Besancon, FRANCE): Mike, first of all, congrats. It is well deserved and I wish you the best. I would like to know: Do you plan on having Lebron start at small forward next season, or move him back to shooting guard?

Mike Brown: I'm not sure. It depends on what happens in the free agent market and how we look after training camp. The one thing I do know is he can play all five positions if need be.

Matt (Akron, OH): How is Dajuan Wagner doing healthwise?

Mike Brown: From my understanding from talking to our trainer, he is doing fine healthwise.

Amanda: (Vancouver, Canada): I'm a huge fan of the NBA and I really would like to be head coach, asst coach, or scout. What do I need to do in order to be successfull like you are today?

Mike Brown: Keep pursuing your dream by aggressively trying to get into the league. Stay involved with basketball so you are up to par with what is going on with it. Last but not least, continue working hard.

Dan Layton (Utah): Mike, I watched the press conference and you sound very classy and down to earth but very hard working. What stuck out in your mind as this job became open to become the Cavs head coach why did this one stick out? Have you always wanted to be a head coach? And what's your goals for this upcoming year? I wish you all the best because you deserve it.

Mike Brown: Thank you very much. I've always wanted to be a head coach for a long time. The goals I have is to improve on a daily basis. If we do that, then the numbers in the win-loss column should take care of itself. Ownership and I had the same philosophical views, LeBron James, Z and the rest of the players, and the cap space all contributed to making this position very attractive.

JAY (CANTON): Most teams in the league seem to use smaller big men or power forwards at center. How do you combat this on the defensive end when that same power forward is quicker than your center?

Mike Brown: We will have a system that we will play and the center will have help from the other four guys. It will never be a one on one duel.

Anthony (Toledo): Did you go with lebron to that amusement park? If so what park was it?

Mike Brown: No we have not gone yet. We will one day, as soon as I get enough courage to hop on the rides LeBron said I'd have to ride with him.

Travis (Columbus): Do you plan on making Anderson a bit more active than he has been in the past?

Mike Brown: Hopefully Anderson will prove that he deserves more minutes. We will have to wait and see.

Chris (Macon, GA): Coach: With so mach cap flexibility and cash to spend this off season what areas do you think the Cavaliers need to address the most? Thanks, Chris

Mike Brown: We have a couple of our players that will be free agents that we have to take a look at first, especially Z. After that we would like good character people, people who will give good defensive effort, people who will knock down shots and share the basketball.

Bob (Ashland): Hey Mike, The cavs had a problem last year where they would consistently come out sluggish to begin the game, and again to start the 3rd quarter, is this a lack of focus/experience, and how do you correct this problem?

Mike Brown: I am not as concerned with starting the game and half off correctly, but more concerned with ending quarters on the right foot and that will be stressed time and time again.

Steve (Bowling Green): Yo Mike! Is it possible to be a great offensive team and a great defensive team at the same time, or do they limit each other?

Mike Brown: A great example of a team that can do both well is the San Antonio Spurs. They are the benchmark for us and should be for everyone else in this league.

Mike (Cleveland): Hi Mike, congratualations on your first coaching job, but please explain the declining of Tractors option

Mike Brown: Thank you very much. Not renewing his option was done to give us more cap flexibility. In the future we may cross paths again.

Thomas (Cleveland): What do you envision for our backcourt and shooting guards? Do we develop the young players that were brought in or do we need to have immediate help now?

Mike Brown: Anytime you can get immediate help at any position, it's something you have to take a look at. I am excited about the young talent in the backcourt, but we have to keep our eyes and ears open so we can improve as quickly as possible.

Mike Brown: Thanks for your time today. I hope we can do this again in the near future. Take care, good luck and let's go CAVS!

The chat was only 20 minutes, but he answered one of my questions!!! Mine was Steve from Bowling Green. I agree that the Spurs should be the model for the Cavaliers. We must excell at both ends of the floor with the greatest all-around player in the league. He also mentioned he likes the pick and roll on offense, will focus on a team defensive system, and he first looks at the character of the player as most important.

Mike Brown is coming accross as a very level headed guy. He seems to preach fundamentals like shooting, help defense and sharing of the ball. He mentioned Ilgauskas's name on a few occasions which tends to make me believe thay are leaning towards resigning him.

West Remy, thanks for the post. I also thought that his frequent mentioning of Z was a sign that Z will be resigned, especially when he included Z in response to why he was interested in coming to the Cavs. Also thought the "It will never be a one-on-one duel" comment was encouraging. Backs up what a lot of people here have said about last season's porous perimeter defense. And another sign that Z will stay.

Also thought his answer to the Tractor Traylor question was intriguing: "We may cross paths again." As opponents? Or did the Cavs say to Traylor, "Look we need the money to go after big guns. Stay loose and we'll come back to you"? I don't know much about the rules - is this legal? It seems like a similar situation with Boozer, with a lot less risk, though. What do y'all think?

Down the stretch we can resign traylor. He knows he's welcome back. He understands our philosophy this off season, I think tractor will be back, i bet we'll give tractor a couple year deal if he's still on the market after we're done going after the big guns.

Yeah, I like the comments on Tractor also. It was probably a very hard decision to let him go since he is such a good guy. Crossing paths just might mean he will return if someone else doesn't pick him up.

Travis (Columbus): Do you plan on making Anderson a bit more active than he has been in the past?

Mike Brown: Hopefully Anderson will prove that he deserves more minutes. We will have to wait and see.

Well if Tractor isn't resigned to backup our bigs, then AV should be getting some good minutes. AV is a good defender and is a hustle player, I don't see any fuss over giving this kid any minutes. After his suprising rookie season, he deserves it.

I think that's dead on. The release was a pure business decision, nothing personal. I'm sure Tractor recognizes this. It's totally legal. Tractor has the freedom to explore any option he wants, including Cleveland. I wouldn't mind seeing him back in a Cavs uni next season. He's mature enough to understand why the Cavs didn't pick it up.

I like the fact that more and more signs are that Z is going to come back. Very positive
