I'd much, much rather go with a first time head coach. Experience doesn't matter, it matters how the guy relates to his players, how he handles them, and how he is on game day.
I will say this: Haslam should hire the guy he believes is the best guy. The problem with Lerner is that he didn't love football and he basically let the media hire who it told him to hire. Romeo was a super bowl winning coach and a hot name, so he hired him. Savage was making his name in Baltimore, so he decided to hire him. He knew who Eric Mangini was and the mega press he got in his first year in NY, so he hired him. Everyone wanted a big football name to run the organization, so he hired Mike Holmgren.
Not once did Lerner actually go into a search full bore and flesh out who to hire. He just took advice of other people and that was that. With Haslam, I want him to take his time and hire the guy that he is impressed with, the guy he believes could lead his team in the future. That is what the Steelers do, and that is what I expect an owner with actual business acumen to do with the next hire.
