Last week the defense was not bad by any stretch. This week it was terrible. That said there was only one guy on defense that didn't have a terrible game and that was delpit. The defensive coordinator isn't to blame when you can't turn your head around on a deep pass, or don't take a step on a TD pass
Not sure we were watching the same games.
KC torched this Defense last week. We couldn’t buy a stop. Now, that’s arguably the most explosive offense in the NFL, and they’re going to make a lot of Defenses look bas this year.
However, this week we had a besieged Houston team at home. Tyrod Taylor was their starting QB for f$&!s sake. And while they still have some firepower on that roster behind a suspect O-line, we couldn’t organize a stop to save our lives. They averaged 8.6 yards a play in the first half. That would be embarrassing for a high school team.
Garrett was a non-factor. The secondary was getting torched. We couldn’t read a screen (second week in a row) and we couldn’t stop the run. If one player is getting beat, that’s on them. When the whole unit is failing like this, it is absolutely on coaching. If Joe can’t figure out how to stop a pedestrian team in the NFL with the amount of talent he has on this roster, that’s a Joe Woods problem. We were never in the right position defensively. The rookie 3rd string QB was able to read our assignments.
I’ll put it another way: great coaches put their players in positions to succeed. Look how this offense is built around Chubb and Mayfield. They are dynamic, and so far our opponents haven’t been able to anticipate our strategy on a play-by-play basis. What is Joe Woods doing schematically to help Garrett? How are we designing our coverage to ensure Newsome and Ward have enough support they can leverage aggressive reads to break up plays?
I’m seeing a lot of 4-5 man rushes with man to man coverage on the corners and safeties kept deep. We’re practically playing a modified prevent Defense 80% off the time. And when we do load up a blitz, the offense always seems to know.
I’m not advocating for the guy’s job, but not sure how anyone would spin these two games into a “the coaches are doing their job, it’s the players’ fault “ type argument.
