Cleveland Development Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If anyone is looking for an excellent restaurant, try Crop at the corner of Lorain and W 25th. My wife and I went last night and it was just an outstanding experience. The high ceilings, the marble and the murals made it more than just about the food. They invited us to go on a tour of the basement and the vault...we had no idea it was even down there. If you go, ask them to take you on a tour of it. The vault door will blow your mind.

The food was just incredible. They brought us a complimentary tuna tartar App that was out of this world. Then I got a wedge salad, it had homemade 1000 island dressing and thickespiecece of bacon on it i've ever seen....amazing. I got the Seared Cab Ribeye with Horseradish Demi, one of the best steaks i've ever had it Cleveland. My wife got the Short Ribs, she didn't even need a knife they were so tender...they were still awesome at 2am when i devoured her leftovers. Someone in the kitchen recognized my wife and sent us a desert that was chocolate custard with a crust that was salted pretzel and caramel. Holy shit was it good.

After dinner we walked over to Market Garden, ABC, Old Angle and Bier Market. The whole street was absolutely slammed. It has really developed over the years into a great area to eat or drink in Cleveland. We get caught in ruts doing the same thing and going to Tremont or downtown and too often forget about W25th. It's great, a wide variety of places...little bit of everything.

My buddy just said to me that Jack Schron hinted at a 1000 room hotel that would be going near Playhouse Square. Anyone have any insight? I can't seem to put the puzzle together.

Major restoration for historic League Park
Decades of decay and dormancy struck out Saturday, as Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson inaugurated the revival of historic League Park.

Built in 1891, the city considers the field a treasure.

Jackson and other community leaders booted ceremonial shovels into the original spot of home plate, from which Babe Ruth hit his 500th homerun.

The site, at 6601 Lexington Ave., will gain an acre, and fully functional baseball diamond. The mayor said there also will be extensive improvements to the landscape and streetscape.

The Indians won the 1920 World Series there, the Cleveland Buckeyes won the 1945 Negro League World Series there. Leroy "Satchel" Paige dominated the Negro Leagues from the pitcher's mound there before becoming the oldest rookie in Major League Baseball when he joined the Cleveland Indians in 1948.

"People will come to Cleveland. One of the historic places they will visit is here," Jackson said Saturday from inside an open tent to ward off cold wind and rain.

The major said the dozens of citizens, neighbors and public officials who turned out in spite of the weather were as a testament to the project's importance. "I played here when I was little. We didn't win," Jackson quipped, "but we played here."

Michael Cox, the city's Director of Public Works, said the revival is "20 years in the making."

The late Fannie Lewis, council representative for the 7th Ward, started pressing for the park's revival then. T.J. Dow, the current councilman, continued the campaign, and Cox said that when Jackson became mayor "this was one of the projects he wanted to do."

Dow said Saturday that the project will include restoration of the original ticket house, which still stands, along with the right-field fence. The city will add another acre to the grounds to accommodate an all-purpose field and an artificial-turf diamond.

There will also be a visitor's center, and there are hopes of moving the Cleveland Baseball Heritage Museum there, from its home in the Old Arcade, said Jay Murphy, who was baseball coach at Cleveland State University from 1996 to 2006.

Cox expects to start moving earth in the next few weeks, with completion of the project around next September.

The project will cost $6.3 million from general-obligation bond proceeds and Ohio Cultural Facilities and ward allocation funds.

Would be pretty cool to toss the ball around on the same ground where Cy Young, Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams and more played.

What do people know about Urban Enterprise Zones? For my career, I work with a variety of different industries all over the US and sometimes I work with companies whose locations in Urban Enterprise Zones save them on taxes.

Is this a realistic option for Cleveland? There's only a few states in the nation that seem to have these.

You try the popcorn?

Went there for my birthday dinner and my fathers birthday dinner this past Saturday. Got a window seat hook up both times - best food in Cleveland.

Ohh, not sure if you knew but it's a former bank, hence the reason why the ceilings are so high, marble floors, etc.

I think that there is a sign on the building, actually, that shows it was a bank before... If you couldn't tell already.

On a side-note. Chipotle is open on Euclid as is the J Gumbo place next door. Gotta say, development seems to be picking up a little steam. I do know the Cleveland Planning Commission is set to review the County's new headquarters project. They are going to specifically review the demolition of the two buildings surrounding the Rotunda and weird apartment complex looking gothic thing.

Last time i was there with a group. Both kinds of popcorn were in front of me when i came back to the table from checking the Cavs game at the bar. We looked like a pack of wolves pouncing on it. Strange site seeing 8 people eating popcorn at a high end restaurant. I never would have ordered it myself...now i can't imagine not getting it. :chuckles:

I've been there 3 times in the last 6 weeks. Love that place.

Not really under the category of "Cleveland Development", but Ford is adding jobs & investing $200 M in their Cleveland engine plant:

Ford Invests $200 Million in Cleveland, Ohio, Engine Plant With Plans To Add 450 Jobs

To meet rising consumer demand for its 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, Ford Motor Company said it will invest nearly $200 million to relocate North American essembly of its popular engine model from Spain to Ohio and add 450 new jobs at its Cleveland Engine Plant.

Production of the 2.0-liter EcoBoost for North America is currently based in Valencia, Spain. The investment in Cleveland will shift North American production to Ohio, while Ford’s Valencia Engine Plant will remain the exclusive production location of the 2.0-liter EcoBoost for Ford of Europe-built vehicles. Valencia will continue to produce and ship parts for these engines to North America.

Ford said it is making the move to assemble engines regionally to help meet rising consumer demand for the award-winning 2.0-liter EcoBoost and to optimize production capabilities around the world. Production of the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine will begin in North America in late 2014. Cleveland Engine Plant currently builds the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine and 3.7-liter V6. The Ohio facility employs approximately 1,300 people. It has built more than 500,000 3.5-liter EcoBoost engines since 2009.

“This is our One Ford plan at its best, giving customers the power of choice to decide which fuel-efficient engine is best tailored to their needs,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of The Americas. “Cleveland Engine Plant was the first to produce EcoBoost engines and will continue to be a cornerstone of Ford’s strategy to deliver affordable fuel economy for millions.”

The hiring builds on the creation of more than 8,100 salaried and hourly jobs in the U.S. last year, including 1,000 in-sourced hourly positions. Ford is more than halfway to its goal of creating 12,000 hourly jobs in the U.S. by 2015 to support new products and investment. Additionally, last month the company said it plans to hire 2,200 salaried workers in the U.S. in 2013 to fill jobs in such key areas as Product Development, Manufacturing and IT.

Great thread.

I (unfortunately) have to present in the coming months about the East Bank of the Flats for class. If you guys have any knowledge about or know anyone connected to the project that could give me some info it would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What place is this that just serves popcorn? Sounds like my kind of place.

Most hole-in-the-wall bars. Popcorn includes salt, which makes people thirsty.

Can someone answer my damn question about UEZs? Jesus...
