NEW YORK -- A small plane piloted by New York Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle crashed into a 50-story condominium tower Wednesday on Manhattan's Upper East Side, raining flaming debris onto the sidewalks below and rattling New Yorkers' nerves five years after the Sept. 11 attack.

Lidle died in the crash.

The twin-engine plane came through a hazy, cloudy sky and hit the 20th floor of The Belaire -- a red-brick tower overlooking the East River, about five miles from the World Trade Center -- with a loud bang, touching off a raging fire that cast a pillar of black smoke over the city and sent flames shooting from four windows on two adjoining floors.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Sad day indeed for Yankee fans..:(

Man.. That's very, very sad..

My prayers go out to his family, along with the victim's families as well..

I wonder if it was intentional or not..

jeez, im shocked, i got a call from my dad while i was at the bookstore today and he said a plane hit a building in NYC, i was shocked, i just got home and turned on the news only to hear it was Cory Lidle.

very sad and tragic.

i cant believe this... i dont know what to say..

Intentional????

Sad stuff..

Shocking and very sad story. My prayers go out to his family.

He was also a scab, so there is a good chance that if he did not save his money wisely, that his family will not have a pension or any kind of continuing health care benefits after his death. I suppose the union could perhaps retroactively allow him to join and provide his family with what his accrued balance would have been, but I wouldn't count on it.

it definatly wasnt intentional.. within 10-15 minutes of lift off he reported fuel problems. He was trying to turn back around to land in the airport he took off on and it was real foggy and didnt see it.. so the reporters say...

He was taking a 15 hr trip to new jersey to cali.. i dont think he would of did it intentionally

on a side note, im ashamed as to how many of my fellow red sox fans have treated this matter, especially on red sox message boards, some of the stuff said is down right disgusting.

here is a chart that was on the new york times website, this is clearly not intentional, he wasnt on the yankees very long so people saying this was a suidcide because of the yankees losing are crazy.

Asking if it was intentional is a legitimante question. Not that Lidle would do it, but you never knew who was hiding on board before he took off (read: terrorist).

Hopefully it was an accident. It doesn't bring anyone back to life, but it will help Americans to sleep at night knowing that our country didn't just get attacked again.

this was a very small plane, it couldnt do damage to much of anything, it crashed into the building, and fell to the ground. these planes are usually light wieght, and you really jepordize your safety if you dont fly them in very good weather condition. im sure there will be some conspriacy theories, nothing short of outrageous.

I'm not sure how you could hit a 50 story building in the middle of NYCity unless A) Serious Fog (But dont they have elevation levels onboard?) or B) Fuel ran out and he was literally going down..
