Most rookies come into the league, but the league was forced to open up to make room for CPJ
His D should get better fairly quickly. Even though their measurements say they are similar, I think CPJ has the tools to be a better defender than Garland. He looks to be sturdier, longer, and with more athletic "pop". I think he has the opportunity to be a solid contributor for a long time. Our porter jr is certainly a better finisher better rebounder and a better interior passer than garland . He also gets us into our offenses quicker than Garland, D and 3 point shooting need work
CPJ also has a ways to go when it comes to defense. He gets stuck on screens, and he hasn't been very good at staying in front of his man and stopping the ball when his guy is driving the lane. He has shown some nice shot blocking ability when he chases and recovers, but it would be better if he could just cut off guys from penetrating rather than chasing them down after they get past him.I think last night's game highlighted some of the good and bad of Porter. He struggled for example with the high double team pressure, which led to late shot clock chucks a few times. He needs experience in these situations to figure out how to exploit the defensive imbalance. I think his go to under clock pressure is to get it to Levert and hope for the best, or barring that Chuck a long three.
But the good news is that once he penetrates he is very good in traffic at either getting to the lYup or short range floater, or finding merril or niang. When those two guys are hitting the lanes open up for him, and they both hit well last night..
Garlands signature herky jerky handle is better than craigs traditional style, but I think craig is sturdier with physical contact. While there is not that much age difference between the two, I think CPJ gas a couple of jumps to make next year and the next, as he figures out the new NBA..
I think he's used to bating players into layups that he blocks due to always being athletically superior. There's times where it's like he's letting them by thinking he'll get the block. You can do that in college but not going to work in the pros.CPJ also has a ways to go when it comes to defense.
