BRISTOL, Conn. -- Dan Patrick is leaving ESPN.

Patrick, who has been with the network for 18 years, announced on his radio show Monday that he will appear on air for the last time Aug. 17. Norby Williamson, ESPN executive vice president for production, made a simultaneous announcement.

A news release said that the mutual agreement will allow Patrick to pursue new interests outside of ESPN.

The final week of Patrick's radio show, which started in 1999, will include a look back at memorable moments, interviews and guests.

"If there was animosity, I wouldn't be doing any radio shows after today," Patrick said on his show, adding, "I hope to be doing radio somewhere, somehow, down the road."

In a news release, Patrick said: "I feel privileged to have had this opportunity and I have extremely mixed emotions about leaving. With that said, I told ESPN that I believe it's time for me to try something different, something that will also be challenging and rewarding. While I'm not sure what that will be, I am grateful to ESPN for its willingness to allow me to pursue new endeavors."

Said Williamson: "Dan has accomplished so much over the past two decades at ESPN and fans and newsmakers have turned to him for his steady and trusted approach. We wish him the very best."

Patrick was a SportsCenter anchor from 1989-2006, winning the National Sportscaster of the Year award by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA) in 2000. He also received a Sports Emmy Award in the Studio Host category in 1998.

Patrick has also written the column "Outtakes" for ESPN The Magazine.

Well the only thing that kept this network even watchable is gone. ESPN anymore is a bunch of middle aged men that couldn't hack it as comedians trying to come up with the best punchline. The anchors now make it more about themselves than the sports.

Just tell me who won the goddamn game and go to the next highlight.

If I want funny I'll read Bill Simmons on espn.com...

A shame it couldnt be Berman.

Amen to that... he is god awful. ESPN is truly unwatchable.

Dan took ESPN allowed ESPN to achieve the monopoly on sports that they have today. He was the journalism side of the program, and a big reason why many young journalists (ahem) have dreamed of filling his spot.

Keith Olberman made Patrick back in the 90's... Olberman >> Patrick

That leaves us with Berman, and One eye Stu.. (Who BTW has coined these memorable phrases)

"Boo Ya !"
"Ahh nah, Son.. He freaked 'em with the okey-doke"

Don't forget Neal Everett with the lithhhhp. Or Linda Cohn looking like a vulture ready to feed..

John Buccigross..wtf kinda name is that?

The only guy I like anymore is Trey Wingo...

I remember the good old days of SC when Kilborn was around!

Yes, Olberman was the man. And yes, I just spontaneously punched my monitor thanks to that pic of Stu.

Remember the old grey/red color scheme? Nice and simple...deliver the sports goings on...

Now it's...

TO reportedly took a shit yesterday, we'll bring you the latest in a 1 hour special tonight at 8:00pm eastern 5:00 pacific.

Barry Bonds: "I don't sign autographs for white people"

We'll break this down on baseball tonight at 7:00pm it will re-air for the next 3 days repetitively...

Get the new ESPN cell phone, be notified anytime Terrell Owens or Barry Bonds' name is said by anyone throughout the country! And coming next spring...the Roger Clemens tracker...everyones favorite 45 year old pitcher who would run into the middle of a busy intersection for a 5 dollar bill. Find out who will pay him 40 million from June through the post season!

I hear that... I believe Kilborn grew up in Minnesota and was/is a huge T-Wolves fan...

I remember him begging to do the Wolves highlights, and he would always have fun with Gugliotta highlights..."GOOGS with THE STEAL" !!!!! :chuckles:

I believe actually played in a game for the T-Wolves during summer league as a joke. And they always used to show the highlight of him playing college ball for Montana State where he referred to himself "Vanilla Thunder."

olberman and kilborn were easily the best. everyone's right, espn is just trash now. I never got into Patrick or his radio show.

so you mean you dont like the budweiser hot seat? or the coors light 6 pack of questions? how can you live with yourself??

thats when espn started going down hill, sponsered segments...are you kidding me....you owned by Disney, there is no shortage of money. Then the anchors started getting to big for the show, you know certain guys have contracts for like 50 shows a year?

Yeah, I love when Berman decides to haul his fat ass to the set during big events like the World Series... then proceeds to go through the highlights handing out idiotic nicknames while sounding like he's taking a dump. No thanks.

Why he didn't get to do the NBA Draft :chuckles:
