Man I just don't think he's operating like the floor general the Cavs need or want him to be.

We have two combo guards right now and at times I swear Mitchell acts like the better point guard. Not even in terms of his vision and passing. But of reading the game and making the right decision and getting people into spots.

I want more from Garland. It feels like he's just trying to compete with Mitchell point for point.

Something just seems off with him.

Well except the previous 2 games he took the right amount of shots and played to the team. A big part of the Knicks game problem was the offense wasn't moving and the Knicks were clogging the lanes. That leads to a bunch of bad forced shots............that didn't go in. Hopefully the minislump breaks, but I can't complain about passing.

I mean...he basically is sharing the rock with another ball dominant player who happens to also be the superior player. This is a huge change for a guy who basically had free reign over the offense last year. He will either adjust or he will continue to regress or stagnate.

I feel like he has been trying to get going by taking shots early unlike before when he would get other guys going early. I think this was advice from Mitchell? I don't think it is working. I think he gets going by other guys getting going first. When he tries to get going early, it throws everyone else off.

Get people involved, it will get you some easy catch and shoot opportunities.

For such a talented, smart player, DG can sometimes be tunnel visioned into spending the entire shot clock dribble, dribble, dribble, attempting pick and rolls. There are times where it's because our screens are garbage, but we can really use more ball movement. Maybe a bit harsh after a nice 21-10 night with just one turnover against the Lakers but that's how highly I consider his skillset and basketball IQ

Agreed. Even though Garland averages more assists per game, Mitchell seems to play with more control and flow of the game

If this trend continues I wouldn't mind giving new Orleans a call....

GTFO.

I think last night was a good sign. Garland appeared to understand his role in the game and it contributed to the win. I think it was their best game as a tandem by far.

Garland also got some looked moving off the ball. I want to see that continue. He did a phenomenal job getting guys going early, particularly Allen and Mitchell, and then converting his own looks later on.

He also was able to make plays with pace that I want to see more of. Cedi leaking out, hitting Mitchell on an early C cut for a floater, and that 4th quarter Donovan and 1 were all examples of quick-hitting actions that generated good opportunities. His next stage developmentally is going to be continuing to feel the pulse of the game and knowing when to look for that stuff vs walk it up to a spaced out high pick and roll.

You bring up a really good observation, Rich. The back court is going to figure it out eventually, but right now they are still taking turns rather than flowing the offense as one unified group. Garland's eye is really the culprit for delaying their synergy.

It strikes me that every player has a priority to establish early in the game and counters which stem off that primary action. Its like when Stefanski establishes the run before featuring play action passes. For Mitchell, I see him establishing scoring first, and pocket passes or kick outs to shooters second. Garland wants to establish his dribble drive first and often looks to get others going before looking to score as a counter.

It's such a gift for the Cavs to roster Ricky Rubio as the reserve veteran point guard. Both of our All Star guards will listen to Ricky as a mentor, and I've seen very few points guards run horns sets with the efficient balance of Ricky Rubio.

I really hope Ricky can come back and compete on the level we all seem to be banking on.
