Denzel Ward

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Is there any update on Ward’s hamstring?
"Stefanski said it was too soon to know the availability of cornerback Denzel Ward (hamstring) and receiver Donovan People-Jones (groin) for the Steelers game, which will be the first AFC North game for the Browns this year. Ward was hurt in the second half, and Peoples-Jones in pregame."

So are we to believe they were riding around the facility on a bicycle built for 3 or 4? Or maybe something like this?

I absolutely hate the idea of bringing this up but where do we sit at this point with Ward given his performance and injury accumulation if his agent draws a hard line at making him say — a top 5 dollar per year CB? Do you allocate those dollars elsewhere if your counter is rejected? Of course it depends on your counter but still.

As things stand today, I don't think the Browns have any choice but to simply pick up Ward's option again next year and then evaluate from there. Paying him top 5 CB money right now wouldn't make sense. Ward and Baker are in very similar predicaments, I expect both will be playing next season without an extension yet in place.

I do look at a guy like Marshon Lattimore and see the benefit of keeping your talent, though. Much like Ward, Lattimore was elite as a rookie and was not as good the following couple seasons. The Saints paid him big bucks this offseason (20 million per year), and he is now performing at an elite level again.

I'm not suggesting the Browns should blindly pay Ward based on his 2018 season, but we know he has the ability to be elite. And with the money we'll get from shedding OBJ's contract (and hopefully a restructure or two elsewhere), in addition to the upcoming cap increase, hopefully there will be dollars to spend.

I'd also really like to see how Ward performs with a different DC next season. Ever since Woods got here, Ward has looked remarkably average. Before Woods got here, Ward was one of the best cover corners in the league. Maybe that's a complete coincidence but....I don't think it is. I think he's been grossly misused.

I'd hand him a ham sandwich, a roadmap, and tell him to have a nice trip. He's not worth that much -- certainly not on this defense anyway. And I do understand the argument that he's more of a man corner being asked to play zone, but unless we're replacing DC's, that isn't going to change, and he's still going to be a man corner playing zone. And what we get from him in that capacity isn't worth that kind of money.

The injuries also are a big factor with him.

I think we're better off letting him walk and taking a comp pick if you are talking top 5 CB money. He's not remotely worth that.

We are better off signing Clowney and drafting another corner IMO.

They both had injury concerns too

If we're not even considering paying him top 5 money then he also won't get that in free agency. He's missed about 25% of games in his career (played 33 out of 44 regular season games) and these injuries will soon start taking a toll. The 2 highest paid CB's Ramsey and Humphrey have combined missed only about 3-4 games in their careers. He also hasn't looked the part of a top CB this season.

I'd hate to get rid of him too early like we did with Joe Haden. We thought Joe was washed up and he signed with our competitors and then ended up being a top tier cornerback for another 4-5 years. We know he has the ability to be a top 5 corner, but for whatever reason (scheme, injuries) he hasn't shown it recently. I would rather sign him for a little less than top 5 money and get him into the right scheme where he can thrive.

this dude when he is on the field has been beat like a drum this year. I could see that technically he hasnt allowed 90 yards this year because the browns are in zone. But he has not played well this year.
