Why would Roger appoint someone who wouldn’t rule in favor of what the NFL wants? This guy likely wants to continue to have a good relationship with the NFL.I was irritated by the league appealing, but the fact that Roger or someone in the league office isn’t handing down the final decision makes it way more palatable. If it had been Roger himself, this would have seemed like a giant circus with a preordained ending. I’m especially relieved that this process won’t take an eternity.
I suspect watson will get more than 6 games, but I doubt an independent reviewer will give the league exactly what they’re asking for. If anything, I suspect they may think it will come down similar. Maybe 8-10 games with a fine and they’ll be able to say they did everything they could. Very much an optics move IMO.
For all intents and purposes, it might as well be someone from the league office.
