Hawes body checking him was the cause. I really wish the NBA called fouls on bigs that move while in mid air, they seem to ignore body contact when their hands are straight up, even though the body contact is what's likely to cause an injury.
If they maintain their position in the air, and the offensive player creates the contact, it shouldn't be a foul on them. Hawes' contact on that play was minimal at best. If that was a Sixer hyperextending his leg you wouldn't be blaming(and certainly not be asking for a foul on) Zeller or Thompson or Bennett etc... The problem was that Dion overstepped on his landing and hyperextended his knee.
