I don’t think the guy is a bad coach at all. I think he’s an excellent coach. The guy never had a chance here once the veterans, like Kevin Love, turned on him.
Hiring college coaches into the NBA has always been a disaster if they were the coaches who had been in college for years. Billy Donovan is the only recent exception I can think of. Countless other failed examples, Pitino, that one guy the Bobcats had...etc. Stevens is the only one that worked out and he was so young he had an easy time adapting to the NBA world where you don't get to cherry pick your roster, play 2x+as many games, can't freely discipline young kids, and have to learn to adapt your offense/defense and not just "run a system." Stevens couldn't really get away from that last one as we saw him get picked apart by Ty Lue multiple times. Beeline was actually one of the worst possible candidates for an NBA coach. You could only really do worse by hiring that guy on your college IM team who was too hungover to step on the court.

That’s two different issues. One, Beilein is a helluva coach. I’ve seen the success he’s had and talked to enough people, hearing glowing remarks about the guy. I won’t say a bad thing about him.

the second issue is whether college coaches can be good NBA coaches. It’s a different game and you can’t deal the same with the modern day NBA athlete as you can a college athlete. If the proper adjustments aren’t made then the coach will be doomed to fail. Kevin Love not only didn’t buy in, but he turned on Beilein. A coach making $5 million per year doesn’t stand a chance against a player making close to $30 million per year. Love is a turd for what he did to a very good man and a good coach.

Talked to a former college player played for Beilein. He said he always junked up the offense and defense and it worked great in college because teams didn't play often and they couldn't figure it out.

He also said he coaches like a dictator. Few guys like that in the NBA anymore

Said he wasn't surprised at all he didn't cut it in the NBA

No, this team just has way too much talent to find time for him. Of course there is room, so long as he's healthy and finds his shot again. There is always room for a good shooter with some size.
The team doesn't have time for a shooter to be injured all the time. And I have doubts about him finding his shot if he can't be on the court.

I also heard that he needs a team to buy in because he uses a lot of deceptions like fake play calls, etc. Like the PG would call out a fake play on the court and only his team would know the play was a different play. I don't remember where I heard this but probably reddit. Heard that the reason Trey Burke was so good in college was because he mastered this type of deceptive playstyle in college but it didn't work in the NBA.

Which is exactly what I said- if he's healthy and can find his shot. What I also know Is this is, even with Mobley, a bad basketball team that can afford to give a guy like him and extended look, to show if he can become healthy. Rushing him out the door like a freshly thrown plate of food doesn't make sense. Now, if he ends up hurt again in camp? That makes it easier. But as of now, they have more an enough room to give him.one more shot.

Agreed. What's the alternative? It's not like we have so many talented players that we don't have a roster space for him. Ride it out this year, and if he still can't keep his ass healthy this year then we won't pick up the team option for the following season.

Agree, except Stevens didn't get picked apart by Ty Lue. He got picked apart by LeBron.

I frequently forget this guy is even on the team. Seems like he’s always injured and even when he’s played he’s only had a few games that gave me some optimism.

As much as I hate to say it, I don’t think he’ll be in the league more than 2-3 more years. He’s about to turn 25 and is one of the few players more fragile than AD with about 2% of the talent.

Yeah, nearing bustola territory. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he caught on elsewhere in a couple years and performed. Seems to be a pattern here.

If he can't stay healthy, his career is over.

A shame if that happens because he has NBA talent. His passing and rebounding is really underrated.

Just can't stay on the floor.

Sucks too that he was never injured before. Was an iron man in college. That damn Beilein ball
