Hiring college coaches into the NBA has always been a disaster if they were the coaches who had been in college for years. Billy Donovan is the only recent exception I can think of. Countless other failed examples, Pitino, that one guy the Bobcats had...etc. Stevens is the only one that worked out and he was so young he had an easy time adapting to the NBA world where you don't get to cherry pick your roster, play 2x+as many games, can't freely discipline young kids, and have to learn to adapt your offense/defense and not just "run a system." Stevens couldn't really get away from that last one as we saw him get picked apart by Ty Lue multiple times. Beeline was actually one of the worst possible candidates for an NBA coach. You could only really do worse by hiring that guy on your college IM team who was too hungover to step on the court.

I would love it if that guy on the IM team got to be an NBA coach. Perfect coach for a players league, just let them play man!

how do you fellow older guys not know how the local media game is played? You can't write send-ups on the team you follow too sternly, lest you lose access to the team.
You think Mary Kay Cabot got her house in Westlake going all-in on ripping an organization that needed thorough ripping? No. She ripped enough to stay "honest" but pulled back when the reality of mortgage payments became clear.

She got to where she is the same way any journalist does.

Hard work and well written articles.

Puff pieces that Altman forces upon the writers for access. The same puff pieces about not criticizing Sexton, Okoro is good at defense, etc.

You'd rather have beat writers who constantly bitch about and eviscerate your team?

I already get that here for free.

Ain't nothing wrong with a little puffin'. Makes us all feel good.

What access? All major stories are broken by national guys. It seems what our scribes have is the ability to transcribe the softball questions asked of our heroes when the PR staff decides to make them available for interviews. Has any writer asked any of the players to their face since camp began whether they are vaccinated? Don't think so. I think that would be a pretty relevant question given the issues with Kyrie Wiggins etc. Puff followed by a 25 win season does no one any good. I hope also they have retired the awful phrase "our culture."

The old, salty journalist who pins their ears back and hammers somebody is a 20th century model. When fans didn't have a venue for going on the attack, the sports reporter could clack it out on a typewriter for everyone else.

The job of the beat reporter is now a PR gig for the franchise. National reporters are a PR extension of players and agents. The narrative is controlled heavily.

I was honestly surprised Mary Kay Cabott went hard after Browns DC Joe Woods after the win against the Texans. It was out of character completely, and seemed to be a "tail wags the dog" reaction to reading negative tweets.

Well, anyways it is always an interesting subplot to me.

“two elderly women are at a Catskill mountain resort, and one of 'em says, "Boy, the food at this place is really terrible." The other one says, "Yeah, I know; and such small portions."
@Lee do you want to handle this or should I?

“Since you’ll admit that the position is a glaring weakness, will you be adding more Fullbacks in the draft this year, Coach Schottenheimer/Carson/Schofner/Belichick/Palmer/Davis/Robiskie/Crennel/Mangini/Shurmur/Chud/Pettine/Jackson/Williams/Kitchens/Stefanski?”

Yeah, I'm not so much irritated that they are a mouthpiece for the organization as "journalists".

That's the job description in the 21st century.

...it's more the lack of creativity in hiding it. That's where I shrug my shoulders.
Quotes have always been placed around the word 'sports journalist's by others in the profession. One of the most beloved Indians sports writers, Hal Lebovitz, was a mouthpiece for the Tribe FO. This isn't anything new, it's not a 21st or 22nd century invention, it wasn't invented by Gen Z or Gen Zed or the reptilians. Sports journalism, and team beat reporters, aren't vying for the Pulitzer- they are covering an entertainment industry. They have to have a good relationship to get scoops. Otherwise, they would end up with their cushy career over and having to do sports talk radio to keep from getting a real job.

We were always Cleveland Jews so my family never did the Catskills, but my Grandparents did have a place in Boca, so that was Jewy enough, lol.
Yep. Just went to Beechwood a couple months ago and noticed two things:

1) It increases in Jewiness every time I return
2) Holy shit, is it nice

Boca, Ft Lauderdale etc are basically Beechwood in Florida.

My Mom grew up in Cleveland Heights, but by the time i came around in 1972, my Grandparents had moved to Beechwood. After they sold their house, they had a condo right next to Beechwood Mall.

My Grandma used to be the head of education for Park Synagogue, which i hear they sold their Cleveland Heights campus which is a bit sad to me.

Before this goes on too much longer, I feel compelled to point out that it's spelled Beachwood. when I was a kid, I wondered where the beach was in that town.
